Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2013: MTFCA Dues to Increase
Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Barbara Klehfoth on Monday, August 12, 2013 - 11:44 am:

Beginning October 1, 2013 the dues for the Model T Ford Club of America will increase to $40 in the U.S.; $50 in Canada and Mexico, and $56 to other countries. The primary reason for this increase is that there have been four major postal increases since the last time the dues were raised. While costs have increased in other areas, the club has been able to mostly offset these through efficiencies and cost cutting.

Life memberships in the U.S. will increase to $700; $850 outside the U.S.

Note that dues are not used to support the Model T Museum. The museum is funded by admissions, donations, gift shop and product sales.

Please feel free to contact me at barbara@mtfca.com or 765-855-5248 if you have questions or need more information.

I'm glad I bought a Lifetime Membership several years ago. It's looking like a better deal all the time. :-)

Every time I see dues go up in any club the number of members drops. Funny thing is they don't understand why.

For a high quality but moderate volume (thousands not hundreds of thousands) magazine and a national organization that provides mutual support with the local clubs and members that have no local group, I think we have a good deal going whether at the old or new rate. I dislike price increases as most of us do but we also need to be realistic about the club responding to the increases in expenses. I'm certain the club could save some money by reducing the number of pages or the quality of the paper used but I'd rather pay the extra $5 per year and maintain the quality.

I believe the money is being spent in a reasonable manner, none of the officers or board members are going to get rich from the dues we pay.

That's less than 11@ a day, if it isn't worth that to somebody they need to reassess how interested they are. I burn more electricity than that reading the forum, I think.

Personally, I would - if it is necessary at some point - pay higher dues to keep the size and quality of the magazine rather than reducing the pages or doing "cost cutting."

Yes, I know for a fact, publishing high quality, with color photos, magazines, pamphlets or anything is not cheap.

I'm willing to pay the price for a quality magazine.

I would rather pay a little more than to have it go electronic like another club I belong to.

I only wish EVERY SINGLE club and organization I belong to wouldn't have their dues come due in January. It's right after Christmas. My car tags (6 vehicles), my car insurance, membership in several clubs, etc... all due in January.

Let's see: $5.00 will buy one more small fishing lure to add to a monster collection of other useless lures, 4 1/2 ice cream cones at McDonald's, 1/9th the price of a fishing license (in California), what I throw in the pot at Lions Club to show off, etc. That's less than $0.02 a day. I'm surprised Barb and Jay can make it all work for that

Aw, it's just a gallon of gas and a pack of chewing gum. For the forum alone (which they graciously give away for free), the club is much more than worth the price of membership. They deserve our enthusiastic support and encouragement.

Hal Davis,I think when your renewal comes up may depend on when you joined originally. I just renewed for this club last week, and the International in May.

I agree that the VF, and the forum, and the books make supporting the club worthwhile.

With the amount of money we all have in our MODEL T cars and trucks, $40/year is a drop in the bucket. The information brain trust available here is priceless.
Posting and downloads from here could/should be reserved for active members, like other clubs. Non-members should get view only access.
It would probably create more work for MTFCA, but maybe a two level membership where $25 gets you forum access only, or forum access plus the top quality magazine we now receive for $40, is what will satisfy more people.
And while you're at it, the Museum could use a tax deductable contribution from everyone as well. If it's not supported by us, it will all go away.
Keep up the great work MTFCA staff !
Just My OPINION though. . .

Aw, come on guys, We get a great deal for our membership dollars. As Steve said: forum, VF, books plus right to participate in club activities , (tours, albeit for a fee), and great connections with other T people. Lots of people devote time to make the club run without adequate compensation. So the dues are $40? Just one dinner for two. Surely if you can spend several K for the purchase & maintenance of a T (or several) one can afford club dues. I think posting on the forum should require membership. There is a big difference between being thrifty and just being cheap. I kept up my membership even though I was inactive with my T for a decade. No offence intended to anyone; I just tripped over my soapbox today. :-)

J Baker, sorry to see you not renew but that's everyone's choice.
I'll gladly pay the price and believe I get my moneys worth.

Thanks Barb and Jay for all the work I know you guys do that is over and above!

Look at how the cost of everything else in this country has gone up in the near past. I feel I get my moneys worth, considering that the fellowship of out T family is at the top priority to me and everything else is just gravy. Thanks to Barb and Jay for all you do for us FREE of charge.
Happy T'ing Mark

I don't want to sound like I am complaining about the cost because I feel it is still a good deal. I just know someone that is on the fence with membership will drop out. I saw it happen in a club I was a member of several years ago and they lost hundreds of members but the dues went up a lot more than $5 and they also cut down on quality and made a lot of people mad. I had already decided that club was not for me before they did the dues increase but that would have helped me make up my mind faster.

As for me, My wife owns a 26 touring that she is restoring with my help and I own 3 other T,s with one that runs but I let her join the club here because she wanted to be part of it. She just does not do the forum so I keep up with it for her (and me). If she decides not to renew someday I bet I will be sending in the dues in my name instead of hers then. I don't join clubs or groups often and this is the only club either of us belong to. I would hang the VF covers on the wall if it didn't damage it to remove the covers! $40 is still a good deal for what we get.

My Life Membership taken out over twenty years ago now seems to be a bargain, mind you we will probably lose some marginal members.

I find it is already a bargain $56.- for an overseas membership. I Wonder what is left after paying the shipping dues for VF.

Up and till I had a heart problem I would spend nearly $5 a day for lunch. So in one day I would spend the increase, so this $5 increase is one hamburger and the Book is worth 10 times more than the Hamburger.
I am like a kid at Christmas waiting for the book to arrive in California and it is not laid down till I go from front to back and back to front looking at the pages one at a time.
Keep up the good work Barb and her crew.

If it were $100.00 a year that would be 27 cents a day.

At 40.00 a year that’s about 10 cents a day…

a 5.00 yearly increase translates to a little more than a penny a day more to belong to a club of a hobby that is your passion

…considering a gallon of gas is around 4.00 a gallon or more, it seems laughable to complain about this increase…

James, I'm glad you renewed. Our hobby (addiction/obsession/psychosis?) is worth the dues to keep our club, activities, and publications so good.

Years ago, I would snarl whenever dues renewal would arrive in the mail; I sometimes procrastinated to where I'd miss an issue. I'd then re-up.

After a couple of times of this, I decided I didn't want to have to think about it anymore, so I sent the money for a life membership. I honestly couldn't tell you when I did that; perhaps it's in the records somewhere. I'm glad I did, though.

By the way, what is that building in your profile? I can't tell for certain, but is it a church?

You live in a wonderfully history-rich area; I sometimes think I'd have enjoyed very much living in New England, especially during the Memphis summers.
