I am over hauling the engine and trans on my 26 tudor I measured the shaft and the brass bushing I got 6 thous difference between the two the book says replace at 5 can I get away with this for a while or what would be the maximum size it could be safe to run with this used tranny thanks mike
It depends on how long "a while" is.
You certainly could get away with it for a little while, but your transmission would certainly be noisy. However, it wouldn't actually hurt much unless other things in your tranny are worn badly.
I'm sure others might disagree with me, but I'd say you can run it like that, but just put down a full transmission rebuild on the list of things to do in the future. However, if those bushings are that worn, I bet that there are many other things that are plenty worn as well. If nothing else, you probably should just tear down the transmission completely and check especially for cracked drums. It's actually not particularly difficult to do, especially if you have the right tools.
Just be sure to get this book. It'll help out a lot: http://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/2074

I have found that if I replace just the pins in a situation like yours (.006") I am happiest. I find there is a LOT more wear on the pins and it is off centre. The bushings wear uniformly!
thanks the rest of the tranny is in good shape I will look at the pins mike
