While at the 35th Annual Can Am Tour in Duncan Canada we were able to view the 1908 Zust that was used in the movie "The Great Race". The touring members were excited because we knew this ahead of time time.
When we arrived for viewing it was difficult to take pictures because it was stored in an enclosed trailer. There was barely enough room to walk around it. But I did.
They opened the rear door of the trailer and there she it.
The next picture is a side view. If you look closely to the back of the car; the furs are there.
The story I am told was interesting. The current owner of the Zust and his brother found parts of this in a "junk yard" and restored her. This is a one of a kind in all her glory.
I am sure other Can Am'ers can help me out with all the technical information I missed.
I wanted to add this link so you could read her story.

Renea,
Great stuff, thank you for posting. I became interested in the "Great Race" last winter after learning of the participants stop in Omaha and trek across Nebraska. Each vehicle and team seemed to face unique and what would appear to me to be insurmountable conditions, yet struggled on.
Thank you for posting,
Rob
Here is the Zust entry in Ames, Iowa 1908
Here's photo of the front. Our tour hosts, Miles & Tina did a fabulous job providing us a great weekend of touring & eating !
thanks Steve~~~ I only wished they would of at least took her out of the trailer. Can you explain the restoration history?
Renea
Only a bit of the recreation info is on this page link

This Zust replica and the other replicas were made for the video "The Greatest Auto Race". This movie has been shown from time to time on public TV networks.
The film was made in Canada, and you can buy the video and watch it. Well made, with lots of history, and filming shows the replicas running, driving and being in all kinds of roads and non roads. If you haven't yet seen this film you are missing out on history of the greatest auto race ever done.
I wish I could have been in the CanAM tour; the rads out of the T.
Miles is a great guy and always ready to give a helping hand.
Regards,
Steveb
I just checked Netflakes (netflix), and they don't have it. They do have the 1964 Natalie Wood Great Race comedy, and the 1934 "Greatest Air Race" from London to Oz.

Yea, the film company tried to get funding to have it released, but takes lots of $$$$ these days for that.
Lollylawood ain't interested in brave deeds of daring automobile's of the last century!

are you all sure? I am confused, I always thought the car was the real deal. Not a repo. Does anyone know the story of this car. Not trying to disprove anyones story but theres a real differance between a prop car. and real history.
For comedic recreation movies, I prefer "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines". I have seen "The Great Race" a few times. I would like to see this newer (and serious) film.
Thank you for sharing the Zust with us!

I understood this car to be THEE restored original ZUST. Although much of this car's body was remade, the chassis components were found abandoned in a field up in the Yukon. The current owner did the restoration, from what I understand.
Thanks Steve!
Steve is correct it is the real ZUST from the Great race, that competed with the Thomas Flyer. Not a movie car.
So this does appear to be the real 1908 Zust from the Great Race. I thought it looked better than most movie cars. But I was not aware of its story. Nice. Thank you for sharing all this.

I too was very disappointed that Harry didn't take the Zust out of the trailer. I've seen it out before and it;s a truly magnificent, one of a kind car. The fact that it was one of the cars that raced against the Thomas is really exciting. Here are some pics I took of the Zust a few years ago.
Thanks Steve, I was told they found the car in very sad shape, but third party. I did not want to repeat something I was not sure of.
Ken, love the pictures. They have it set up so you can not touch it. Oppps I did!
