When I turn the top castle nut, the stud also turns causing the bottom large rectangular nut to move up the stud and compresses the lower spring.
Just was not expecting the spring to be compressed that much. Is that correct? If not any suggestions on how to keep the stud from turning?

If you can get the top nut tight enough to install the cotter pin, you can then back off on the nut which will turn the stud enough to decompress the lower spring.

Yes I have cotter pin installed in top castle nut, tomorrow I will remove pin and try your suggestion. Thanks Norman.

Tom:

I think the idea is to turn the top castle nut with the cotter pin installed. That way it will force the stud to turn relative to the large rectangular nut to decompress the lower spring!

Arnie--Your correct, thanks for pointing that out. I thank Norman and you for the help--it was a long day just mounting the radiator.
