Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2013: Transmission: how check correct mounting

Hi,
yesterday I assembled my 1925 transmission. (one of the 3 drums is wider then the 2 others)
How can I simple check if I installed the tripple gears correctly ?
Here in this forum I have read: It should be possible to rotate the 3 drums independent ?

Is this true ? Mine don't rotate independent. They rotate all 3 in the same direction, but with different speeds.
Should it be possible to stop one and the other 2 rotates ?
Or stop 2 and one rotates ?

So how can I test it ?

Thanks a lot for help.

Willi

Assuming the flywheel is stationary and the clutch is not engaged, if you can rotate one drum and the others rotate at different speeds, then you have the triple gears timed correctly. You will not be able to rotate only one without the others turning.

OK, then maybe it`s Ok. (I try it without clutch disks) And all turns into the same direction, but at different speed ? I still don`t understand how I can drive back:-) But till now it worked. Is there somewhere a good description how it works ?

See the above. I don't think it's possible to get it wrong. It either goes together or it doesn't.

The club's transmission repair manual has a good description how the planetary trans work. http://modeltstore.myshopify.com/products/service-manuals
Hard to explain, but right after I have read that article I think I understand it..?

When the reverse drum is stopped, the reverse drum gear follows the triple gears - and the brake drum/driven plate is also connected to the triple gears, but with another gear ratio, so the driven plate is forced to compensate for the different gear ratios by turning backwards.

So when not stopped it's not needed to turn backwards to be a reverse gear - it has to do with the different gear ratios at the triple gears compared to the 27/27 teeth on the driven gear connected to the brake drum/driven plate.

I would have to check to see about direction. I know that with the brake drum held stationary and the flywheel rotating (I.E. in Neutral), the Reverse drum rotates one way and the Low drum rotates the other.

I am so fascinated by the T tranny that I painted one different colors and built a stand to display it. You can rotate the flywheel by hand and stop each drum with a band I modified by welding some handles to it to grip like a set of pliers. I take it to car shows for display. People ask me if it is a winch.:-)

Hal

Now you need to show us some pictures. The planetary gearing is hard to understand and it is probably very simple.

Thanks Chris,
the animation on www.modelcentral.com is great. They made a very good job.

But I still have to look it it several times ;)

Willie if you get the timing marks on the triple gears in the right location according to the manual you should be OK. If those marks are not timed correctly it wont turn at all in my experience.

If the triple gears are on the pins and the transmission drums turn, then you got it correct.

Dave,

Here is a link to a prior thread with some pics of the tranny.

It's a little difficult to see the triple gears, or at least the business end of them, but you can see if you look closely.
