Appears the assy should work. Shaft is straight, spring not broken. weight has not separated from gear, gear moves freely on the threads. Will appreciate any help.
Thank you,
Bob Underwood

My first guess would be that the shaft key came out when the Bendix head #5019 was slid on the starter shaft...

BUT...I have also seen the dog point screw #5024 be able to take that load with a weak key placement. So...maybe two things...when the bolt head seats on both screws...the downward facing tab on the washer MUST wedge in the spring end clearance.

About the key....they can be real buggers! Interference about the width of a hair can cause them to walk up and out of the key-slot as the bendix head goes on...I always dress a key (new or used)on fine emery all four sides, plus break any sharp edges. Then trial fit the key dry on the bendix head going on. you don't want it to fall through...you don't want it loose...but you do want it to glide and if it doesn't glide the key IS going to walk up when you try and tap the head on! Once I get that 'smooth as silk' glide...I put the key in the shaft with a dab of grease which provides just enough resistance to keep the key from tipping when the edge sees the Bendix head...and the 'smooth as silk' takes it from there...works every time :-)

Aha....so all spins, the tiny gear detent plunger pin is good...the gear is smooth on the Bendix shaft thread and has not become bound at either end...the bolts are in the correct ends and down tight...and the engine won't spin while the Bendix spins?

Ahhh...try rotating the engine by 90 degrees with the front crank and try again? If it then spins and the engine spins with it...you are NOT going to like the solution! If not and the Bendix still spins without the engine, I'm a bit at a loss based on experience.

Are the Bendix parts original or recent repro? Recent meaning shipped in 2013? I'm not sure why but for about 2 years the vendors refused to ship any complete replacement Bendix and for two Hershey's it was impossible to even find an original Bendix even at a premium price after Wednesday. Just saying.

George; Starter is out of car. The gear stays in the back position, does not move when when spring turns. The Bendix is at least 40 years old. Appreciate your reply.

Is the spring wound in the correct direction? Has it worked in the past with the spring that is on it now, or is the spring new?

Starter worked fine 2 years ago. Just trying to find out if a new one is needed.

If the battery you are using to test the starter is low, it may not be giving the quick spin needed to move the gear on the spiral.
