I need to replace a backing plate on a Ruckstell axle housing. How do you back up the rivets that are inside the axle tube? Also, are the ends pressed on or should they slide on/off easily once the rivets are removed?
You need to back up the rivets with a LARGE solid bar of steel. Nearly the size of the inside diameter of the tube, less the rivet heads.
The parts are pressed on the axle tube. I had to change the ruckstell end on one and it took a 60 ton press to get the broken one off and a replacement on. You might be further ahead to call Dave at Chaffin's and ask them if they will do it for you. The blood, sweat and possible tears you will shed are well worth the UPS charge.
