Does anybody know what thread the fine screws which hold the brass cover plate to the switch are? Can I but them somewhere? My switch has been damaged with the cover plate put on with some rather ugly self tapping screws. I have a spare switch but don't have the screws to fix the plate on with. Thanks in advance.
I believe that I have some of those screws. The screws in my 16 are brass. Send me your mailing address and I will see if can donate you three of them.
Thankyou Dave. I will post a picture of the switch and cover plate in question. The cover plate is the same size and shape as normal but has nice Ford Canada Ontario embossed in it instead of Ford USA. I have sent you a personal email.
This is the correct coil box switch plate from the introduction of the metal box in 1914 to at least 1917 as there was one on our 1917.
It reads " Ford Motor Company of Cananda Limited, Ford, Ont."
I can measure the screws tomorrow Warwick.
#6-32 1/4" long
Correct. Rich is faster than I am.
Same as the parts book I have just found!
Ace hardware has those.
Thankyou to all. I don't often seek advice but when required the forum always comes through!
David, that is the same switch plate as on my 16. something else to look at on all our Aussie cars, as I suspect there would be a lot of repro USA ones on our Canadian cars. Dave H has offered to send me some but I will still try to find a local source which may be difficult.
Warwick, looks like you are on track to come up with the correct screws. If your switch plate is antique looking, new shiny screws may not look just right. I have found that if you dip them in motor oil and then burn it off with a torch you can give them a nice aged look. Just an idea for you---others may also have suggestions also. Joe
Perhaps, down under they were still using the brass switch plate, but I think the USA cars had gone to the steel plate by 1916, but they still used the hard rubber switch. By 1918, they had the new cover and the redesigned switch.
Google brass screws. I immediately found 6-32 brass screws. Little less than $5.00 for 100.
Thanks Harry. Did not even think to Google them once the thread size was established! Lots to choose from but still need to get the right style. Lots of those ugly modern style pan head type and the domed head type for a Phillips type screwdriver. Did see some nice domed slotted ones that looked just right. Maybe the T parts suppliers could add this screw to the coilbox parts section of the parts catalogues. Thanks again guys for helping out.
Warwick, If you can't find any 1/4" send me your Mailing address and I'll send you a few 1/2" that you can cut down. I can spare a few.
I have a NOS 14-16 switch, and the information above is correct.
Does your switch take the long screws that go clear to the back of the switch or the short 1.4" screws?
