Ron Dupree:

It looks like you may be able to drive your 16 touring up County Road 43 to Glen Haven and tackle the 18 degree switch backs, above town. The local News paper has reported that Larimer County Public Works Director, has stated the 43 might be open by late 2014. Originally He said it Larimer County Road 43 would not be open until September 2015. The Feds have stopped in and are helping rebuild the road.
The county is allowing Glen Haven residents To drive from Estes down Fish Creek Road, to Glen Haven. I would hope that by next summer they will allow others to drive down to Glen Haven by way of fish creek road. If so and you still want to try the switch backs I will round up some other Ts and we will do it.

Dave, fifty years ago, when my older brother went to U of C in Boulder, he took us on a road that (as I remember) took us to Central City. It was a hair raising unpaved road that really tested a modern cars brakes. Are you familiar with the road I'm referring to?

Terry:

I know the road you are talking about. I used to drive my model Ts up to Central City when it was just an old mining town. I have never done the road that you are talking about it starts in Idaho Springs. Every one that has done it says it was a real challenge and very scary. The State has now built a new and much better road to Central City. I believe that the new road is paved. You would not recognize Central City now, Colorado voted to allow full scale Nevada type gambling in three old mining towns and Central City was one of them. That's why the State built the new road to Central City and Black Hawk.

I've been on that road, it was called "Oh my God road" as I recall. It was quite steep as it went right over the mountain or at least it seemed like it at the time. You needed a full tank of gas and maybe some extra just leaving idaho springs.

I am glad you brought up the "Oh my God Road. I had forgot about that road. I am always looking for new challenges for my Ts. I think next summer I will try to9 round up a couple of other Ters around here and try it. Boy roads around here are scarce now with all the closures. If I can get this computer to work I will show one of the bridges close to our place. Most of the county bridges held up OK but the approaches washed out. This bridge lost the top.

My computer says that the picture was 195 K but when I tried to post it the computer says it was 202. So I reduced the picture some more. I hope it was not too much the computer says 190k now.

When I get old I'm gonna retire and take my T and get a house close to Dave Huson so I can drive those mountain roads with him and his buddies.
What a great way to spend time!

I've driven the OH MY GOD ROAD back in the 1980,
had to help pull a couple of people out of there car that went over one of curves and down the embankment that they didn't make it around, and they were drunk. That was quite a road back then.
Had to flag down others to drive miles to find a phone to get help for them.

Again I would like to try and sow why so many of our county and even some state highways are still closed.

Dave, regarding resizing pictures to fit on the forum, I use Corel Paintshop Photo Pro. I resize them to 100 dots per inch (DPI) and set the longer side of the picture to 7.9 inches, so far that has always resulted in a large picture that still fits under the forum size limit. Example:

Dave,

Looking forward to seeing Glen Haven next fall. There was an article in USA Today, yesterday, about Glen Haven and the flood. They quoted the owner of the general store as saying they were in the process of rebuilding.

Haven't been ignoring your posts, but we have been in the Smokies the last week looking at some eastern color in our modern car.

Ron:

I will have to see if I can get ahold of the USA. I will be very surprised if they do rebuild the General Store because Glen Haven is so isolated that very, very few tourist ever get there. You can sit on the front porch of the General Store, eat a huge Cinnamon role, drink coffee and only see about three cars go by. Anyway I hope he does open back up and especially still sell the cinnamon roles.

Dave, Another road that, at least, Western Coloradians are familiar with, is the so called, 'Land's End Road' that descends the 11,000 foot western side of the Grand Mesa, between Grand Junction and Delta. For those not familiar with mesas,; they are flat topped mountains and the Grand Mesa is billed as the world's biggest flat topped mountain. At the western edge of the Grand Mesa where the Land's End Road starts down; the drop is so severe that you can stand at the lookout on the edge and literally see for miles. I swear they must have blasted the switchbacks out of the side of the mesa, because most places, there is just not enough slope to have just bulldozed a road. I haven't done it in a T, either, but I sure would not do it without auxillary brakes, and a good Ruxtell (and no auxillary trans unless it was a KC Warford).

There is also a road that goes over the continental divide following the old Denver and Rio Railroad narrow gage grade from the East end of the Moffitt tunnel to Winter Park You go over
a bolder field at the top, I don't think it is open or passable since the late 1980's. Quite a drive in a 4x4, I can't find my pictures. There was someone killed in the only tunnel called needle Eye Tunnel.

I have also taken a County Road (not sure of the number) that runs between Telluride (past their airport) and Ridgeway. It is an unpaved road and isn't spectacular except that it should be driven in a 4 wheel drive vehicle and I did it in a 2 wheel drive Dodge Dakota. My wife said it I ever do that again with her, it would be the last time. Another fun route is the road between Evergreen and Georgetown. It is easily drive in a 2 wheel drive and is paved as I remember, but has very nice scenery and some switchbacks near Georgetown.
