Thought I would post a few of my old pics from Arkansas. The writing on back of photo says Diamond Cave River near Jasper Ark Aug 1923.

The area around Jasper is an amazing part of the Ozarks. You really need to drive it to believe it. If you enjoyed the MTFCA/Hillbilly Tour based in Eureka Springs this year, we have an even better treat in store for you! :-) Our Arkansas Tin Lizzies club is considering a tour in the Jasper area sometime soon. The only problem is finding somewhere to house the participants during that time. Stay tuned!!!

Hi Mike. Is Harrison to far away. I think there is also some kind of cabins or retreat near Ponca. You are right about the country around Jasper. It has been a tourist area since the model T days and there is not a lot of modern urban type buildup there yet. I believe hwy 7 goes all the way to Russellville .? We used to drive the old scenic roads back when I was a kid in the 60s Keep me posted as to the tin lizzies tours. Im now a member, so I should get the info from them also. Hope to have the 27 Sport touring done by then.... PS If we go to that area it would be neat to see if we can find this spot. ....

Yep Ark 7 goes through Dardanelle and Russellville. New China buffet, just off I-40 on 7, is a good place to dine.

Steve: We eat there everytime we go to Russellville. Its a very good place to eat. Something in the picture of the car in the river. Notice all the big rocks thrown to both sides of the roadbed in the creek. That had to be done everytime there was a big rain. They did it by hand (winter or summer). We still have "river foards" in the Ozarks, the big difference today is someone nearby has a tractor or the county will take their equipment out there to fix it. The "good old days" may have been better but they were a lot harder ...

Talking about driving the old roads reminded me of a trip thru the Ozarks in the early 70s. We were up near Rogers/Fayettville area and somewhere near I think Huntsville we saw Hwy 16. We knew that came out at Clinton/Witt Springs area near where we lived. So we took it on a Sunday about noon. A few miles of small blacktop turned into state maintained gravel. Since we lived on a state maintaned gravel road anyway, we just kept going. There were no town, very very few houses, and everynow and then a hwy 16 sign, some of the signs were even nailed to trees. The telephone wires were even nailed to trees. There was even a place where the phone line left the trees and ran across a field to some farmhouse, the line was nailed to the tops of the fenceposts. I was lucky to have a dad that would point out this type of stuff to me. About 1/2 way to Whitt Springs Daddy started worrying about gas. We had a lunch and ice chest with us so we were good there. At this point the road started having grass grow up in the center of it. I do not mean a little green patch but the rubbing the bumper type of grass. Sometime in the late afternoon we came to a old store/gas station/post office/feed store at some wide spot in the road. I do not know the name of the place, probably not even there today. There were 2 visiable gas pumps. We bought gas and the old man told Daddy we were lucky because he was almost ready to leave as he was "between church and chores" That is the only time I remember actually getting gas from a visiable pump. The phone on the wall was still a wood box hand crank phone. I remember it as the guy got a call on it. His party line ring was "3 longs and a short" I can remember that because we still had party lines then at our house and our ring was "3 longs and a short" We were assured we were on the right road and would be to Whitt Springs in about another hour or so. We crossed several creeks that looked like the picture above during the trip. Remember this was a State Hwy 16. It makes me wonder today what the roads thru the Ozarks were like in the T days if some of the state hwys were like that in the 70s. But to this day that is one of my best memories of a day out with mom and dad. The trip was not a hurried up get home trip. We took our time stopped to look at the sights, played in the creeks, Just a real nice day, Wish I could do it all over again....

Donnie,

Does this look like your road? Arkansas Route 16

That road goes a long way.

Hi: Yes that is the road. The part Im describing is the crooked part thru the "green" area of the Ozark National Forest shown on the map. We still live at Clinton where hwy 16 meets US 65. Hwy 16 is still there but it is all blacktop today. It is still a nice road to drive in the fall for a fall foliage drive. It is a small crooked road. They were blacktopped in the 60s to the 80s era as "farm to market" roads. It is still legal to drive tractors or any vehicle used as a farm vehicle or used for animal husbandry on the road and they have the right of way. There are lots of these farm to market hwys all over the Ozarks and are very nice drives. But growing up in the time of the old dirt roads in the hills, they just do not have the charm of the old days... I guess that's the price we pay for living so long and getting old...

Tom -- Thanks for that link. It says that Ark. Hwy 16 was built in 1924 and runs for 261 miles. It goes through Fayetteville, where I live, and Clinton, where Donnie lives. A lot of it is through the Ozark National Forest and is a wonderful Model T road.

A few years back, my Model T mentor Bill Younkin and I drove our T's mostly across Hwy. 16 from Fayetteville to Dover, Ark. (about 140 miles?) to meet up with Ken Swan and his wife Joyce. Ken was on a mission to locate the chicken house where he found his Touring Car in 1954. It was a 50-year observance of that find, and Ken and Joyce drove that very T from Tennessee to Dover and spent a few days there. Bill and I met up with them and toured around a bit with them and some local T'ers in our club. We stayed the night, then drove back to Fayetteville the next day. It was a wonderful Model T trip on some great roads, one which I'll never forget.
