came home from a swap meet with some more "priceless" junk i dont need except to clutter up my barn some more, and one is the rocky starter. its a wind up spring type like a lawn mower motor. a very heavy spring, in about a 3"tube, about as long as the block, and a gear set to run off the crank shaft with its own wind up crank off to the side. lots of parts, no instructions. i tried to search but the word "starter" consumes hundreds of pages. any one got one, seen one, heard of one...jay? you must have the old add at least!

Can't help but you might check to see if there's a patent number on it. If you can find a patent drawing, that might help.

Briggs & Stratton Touch-N-Mow engines have a spring wound self-starter that operate similar to the Rockaway starter. When the mower is shut off, the spring automatically rewinds, energized for the next start.

A couple years ago, a neighbor gave me a Yardman Touch-N-Mow mower. The starting system worked great but I prefer my higher quality Toro so I gave the Yardman a tuneup and sold it on Craigslist.

Clayton,
Be aware before you plan on using it that there is likely a good reason why it did not become more popular. Maybe high cost or not reliable or maybe it was out did by electric starters.

I wonder what you do if the spring runs out and in has not stated yet. Can you hand crank or is there a way to manually reset the spring.

Jim

How does it reverse direction to rewind the spring?

there is a hand crank in the pile of parts, it fits thru a hole in the front case.not sure if that resets the spring, or cranks the motor. 8 revolutions!!! seems a bit much, but you only get 1/2 with the ford crank, which is enough for a healthy motor. i think it would be a fun gadget if i have all the parts, and it works. i wonder more what disengages everything when you are running, in other words, what is still wearing out when your not using it.
