This morning I was cleaning out the rust in the water jacket of an engine.
I found a worm looking thing in the rust. Looking closer it were 3 pieces of iron wire.
Wonder why it was in there.

They were put there to hold the cores in place during the casting process. Think the chock wave coming when a flood of molten iron comes down the narrow passages of sand..

The wires were supposed to be cleaned out with the sand after the block had cooled, but the workers didn't have time to be thorough..
