Hello folks, I thought I would add a few items that worked well for me in straightening a '15 rear axle housing. There have already been some great posts that helped me and thought I might add my 2 cents. This post http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/179374/188344.html?1297335103 from 2011 does a nice job of summarizing a few of the other post, has the right pictures and was super helpful to me. Before I jump into what worked for me, let me be clear on my level of expertise: I have now straightened exactly one axle housing (joking, well sort of). I used the "lathe" method. So, here are my comments:
1) It was not difficult. 2) How did I know the axle was bent? The outer bearing came out with great difficulty and was really hard to get back in. I found out when I was getting ready to install inner seals. I estimate it was bent a little more than 1/8". 3) Making an adapter plate for the lathe similar to the one shown in Richard Gould's post (see above post reference) made aligning the axle a breeze. 4) I used a Harris J63-2 rosebud tip at 7#/7# settings (supplier recommendations), the rosebud tip heated the housing tube red hot in a minute or two. By the way, it was a smokey process even though I tried to clean the housing well. 5) I used a cheap bullnose center similar to the one shown in the pictures in the above post (by Anthonie Boer) to center the housing, leaving the center in the housing until the housing cooled. 6) My lathe's slowest speed is about 30rpm, and that worked fine. Once the axle was in the lathe, the actual straightening process was over in 5 minutes. The bearing now slides right in and out of the housing and the car is back on the road.
