I always thought the crank holder was to store the handle upright so it wouldn't snag things like tall grass or fallen branches if you go off road or hit the ground if you drive on a deeply rutted lane. How would you use it as an antitheft device, put a padlock across it?
Yes, when the crank is in the "up" position and resting in the forks of the "Y" you put a padlock around the crank and thru the hole in the little ear just below the "Y" You can barely see the ear in the photos above.
