ILLEGAL TO SELL!

Here in California it is legal to sell the piece of paper as an historical document. Here it is illegal ( fraud) to try to register a vehicle with it.

Most titleS over a certain age are worthless, I am talking 50+ years. The titles being sold on the Facebook webpage under Model T parts for sale are worthless. You would be committing fraud to sign the owners name on the back of any aged title! Selling old titles is nothing less than a scam.

BUYER BEWARE!

To me the issue is semantics. The piece of paper is a "Title Certificate" ( just a piece of paper saying so and so owns such a vehicle) and the title is the official registration with the state. You can give the piece of paper to anyone, have it stolen, or destroy it and you have not lost the title. The state still recognizes you as the owner holding title to that vehicle.
Trying to use that "Title Certificate" to register another vehicle is simply fraud. Putting the numbers that are on the certificate on another vehicle will never make that vehicle into the one recognized on the title.
