David, For an instant, I thought you were driving on the wrong side of the road. I'm so used to driving on the 'right' side that I'd get killed for sure on the left. Looks like fun. Unfortunately, it expensive enough to fly to Australia and I can't even imagine what it would cost to fly a T there and back.

Maybe Peter Kable or someone else who has had a T shipped can give us an idea of what the cost would be.

OK lets sort out this simple problem of the concerns of either having a drive or getting a ride..
There are many cars here that will have spare seats during the rally, this will be sorted out prior to the event, as far as getting a drive for a day or sharing a car for the week, that is also something that is "do-able", its as l mentioned last week a logistical maneuver that can easily accommodate all international visitors.
WE DO NOT EXPECT nor would we need you to ship your car/s over for the tour, If you have the time to do that and we do not for a minute try to put you off from doing it, we can assist in your shipping and storage... that's the easy part, but don't forget, you do not need to bring your own car...
Accommodation is easy, a flight from LAX directly into Melbourne Victoria is 13 hours, if you'd like some ideas to make your stay here longer, we can assist with your ideas.
Joss Sanderson Tucson AZ is our North American/ Canadian liaison coordinator and can assist with most ideas you can throw at him, Joss seems to have been most places down under and can give you all the heads up you're likely to encounter.

We'd certainly love to see you all down under in the spring of 2016 ( our spring - your fall ).

email me directly or send me a message via this forum and l'll get back to you .... not all at once please...

Hope this assists, we are here to make your stay as pleasant as is possible..

I like it......I like it a lot! Need to work on the wife for an Ok on this one. Have a friend that said he would provide me with a car if I would visit. Many things going through my mind on how to make this work.
Have the same question as Chris....what's the average cost to have a T shipped both ways from California?

CAN WE GET BACK TO YOU WITH A FEW ANSWERS ON THAT, I use Kevin Bailey out of Indianapolis IN, BUT his brother ships out of Cali.
When l get an answer l'll post it here, along with anyone else who has contacts there and here.

David.

By 2016 a person could save the money and purchase a T there and would only have to ship one way. Or instead of shipping sell it on commission. It all depends on what you're willing to spend for a once in a lifetime opportunity.

I have been fortunate enough to attend 3 USA Tours and enjoy your hospitality. Helping with the organisation of this tour will be an opportunity to repay your hospitality! Can I suggest anyone seriously considering coming over for this tour come car less and enjoy riding with your Aussie hosts and enjoying some truly wonderful scenery. Spend the money of not bringing your car over on upgrading to business class for a more pleasant long haul flight, ensuring you are fresh and ready for a great week of T Touring.

I was doing just fine with the video until you got all suicidal and played chicken with the white SUV or whatever that vehicle was. It was hard to determine what type of vehicle we were going to crash into with my eyes closed.

Airport to Lardner Park - Warragul-Drouin.
If you fly into Melbourne, can we suggest ( if you don't need to hire a car at the airport - DONT ).
We have airport to Rail station busses, Gippsland has a fantastic country train, fast clean and secure- that will bring you relaxed all the way to Drouin and Warragul.
If l need to head up to the city ( Melbourne ) this is my preferred mode of transport... forget the drive initially...
We can collect you if timing works both ways.
Either way, we can get you down here easily, without the need to hire a car.
Of cause, we are 2 1/2 years out, but it is something that we can do to assist.
If you choose to take the hire car option, there are plenty there.
DRIVING ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ROAD IS EASY - JUST REMEMBER TO LOOK TO THE RIGHT, NOT THE LEFT !!!

David.

shipping a car from the US to Australia and shipping it Home.
Three Options..

OPTION # 1 - BRING A GOOD CAR YOU WOULD WANT TO SELL TO PAY FOR YOUR HOLIDAY, USE IT HERE AND SELL IT HERE, car pays for its self and probably most of the holiday too....... *** warning - government documentation will need to be completed prior to the vehicle being shipped/landed... its not difficult to do..***

OPTION # 2 - SHIPPING TWO CARS TOGETHER IS CHEAPER THAN JUST ONE ON ITS OWN, here are the prices l have been quoted for trips from both Long beach California and Indianapolis Indiana.
( its not a cheap exercise a full return trip ).
[From Kevin Bailey- usafreightkevinATyahoo.com]
Ok , Melbourne to Long beach $2800 each one way with two cars , Melbourne to Indianapolis one way over each $$3800. Based on two.
Return Long beach $3200each based on one car, Indianapolis per each one car $4200.
If one car or two to long beach and can be shipped early to suit us, we can do for $2000.as we can load with some other freight we may have and the car will be stored in our depot in Long beach till ready to pick up.
Its very hard to give exact costs as going over depends on other freight we have at the time, as we floor load timber, approx. 800 height and then car on top.

OPTION # 3 - FORGET THE BRINGING OF THE CAR IDEA and just come and relax.

I hope that other shippers chime in here with quotes for the bringing and taking home of T's.

Cheers David.

OPTION # 4 - BUY A CAR IN AUSTRALIA. Another option is buy a antique car here, use it for the tour and take it back to the USA. Guys on this forum in Australia could help out. Sometimes good Ts pop-up for sale here, there's one available now, but I was more thinking of a pre-WW2 British car, a 1920s Morris or Austin for example, they're cheap cars here but would be a rare and interesting car in the USA.

A lot of $$$ and a huge hassle to ship a car to Australia then back to the USA...forget that, plus your T could be damaged in shipping.

David,
At this point, my wife and I plan on flying to Australia and leaving our car at home. Have a good friend there that we may ride with or borrow a car from. This is early in the planning stage....but a start in the right direction. My wife and I have talked about visiting Australia numerous times and your "Sneek Preview" pushed us over the edge. Thank you and your support team...look forward to meeting you and gaining many new friends.

Les

Warwock has the right idea. forget the T and just come and enjoy being driven on the tour.

On past tours there have been upwards of 20 people or more from overseas. On one tour I had 15 Model T'ers from the USA staying at our house, so its even possible to save on accommodation.

As noted to ship a car to and from the other side of the world is as much as a second trip for 2 or more.

I only did it when I fond it was possible to leave the car in the USA for more than one year.

All up we drove for 6 months (in 2998 and 2011) which worked out cheap as the cost of a hire car for that time was more than the shipping of the car to an from the USA and we had the fun of driving to Richmond and back.

From memory we have been on eleven USA Model T tours over 30 years. This has translated to having met and become life time friends with lots of American saved heaps on accommodation (an for a lot of them when they come to Australia).

If you are thinking of coming in 2016, start saving ( start a special account if necessary) then let David and his crew know and ask them or check with them that your plans on track) on one tour here the USA travel agent had no idea about internal travel to the tour held 250 miles from the airport and I and others had to collect the group and escort them in hire cars out of the city to the tour.

I'm sure T owners using the forum here would assist you maybe even scoop you up at an airport and take you with them to the Tour if they can.

There is plenty of time to get organized, so get to it.

Thanks Peter for the comments on your experiences. Your experience and comments are valued. One great thing about this rally is it is still 2.5 years away. If you make a commitment to come and enter there is still plenty of time to save! Some folk have expressed concern about the rally entry fees but we as a committee consider what we will include great value and it will only get better over time! As David says, If you have any questions, please ask him directly via email. I am very excited about sharing some of the best T Touring roads in Australia. David and I are lucky to live where we live!

Hi David and Warwick, This tour sounds fantastic and since I have driven some of the roads in the area with you guys they are great Model T roads, gorgeous scenery, very little traffic, enjoyed seeing all the different colorful parrots.
Rosemary and I will be signing up for this tour and look forward visiting with your families.

Hey Milt,Bummer you got to do that Montana 500 before me! It is on my list of things to do. You have to be there when I do. Great to read you are both planning on coming over in 2016. It will be good to see you again.

There is lots of time but need to plan now. Accomodations have been blocked out near Lardner Park for anyone traveling from overseas.

Suggest not shipping a car as the paperwork, insurance etc is a really time consuming operation and then lots of work on the Australia end to collect the car.

Have already begun organizing a group to go over with an open return - LAX-MEL. Suggest taking the country train to Warragul and hiring a car later.

The organizing committee will provide any assistance needed for accomodation, car hire (modern), arranging rides for tour, air transport, and very important with internal arrangements for touring about Australia. Can provide suggested plans for anywhere from 7 to 28 days and provide plans to meet each couples desires. Australia is huge so you can drive about Victoria for a couple weeks and then fly to another city. All this requires is a bit of time to do proper planning and a one on one discussion to determine what sort of things one might want to do. Beaches, cities, animals, history or?

Suggest getting contact information to David dare - Rally Director in Australia first. I then would provide any assistance you need. FYI - I will be going over in 2015 to work both as a member of the rally organizing committee and to coordinate internal Australia travel.

Last - If you want to spend some time in Tasmania, Milt Roorda is an expert having driven around it in a 1913 Model T. Give him a shout out!

Best to all, Joss Sanderson

Milt and Rosemary, great to hear, we look forward to seeing you again.
Peter, that's really a very good idea, although we still have 2 years and 4 months before we begin ( that's really not that long at all )hopefully between now and then we have an aussie dollar cooling too.
As Rally Director, l think you can see from the messages back and forth, that we are as committed to having you folk over from the USA and Canada as we are to having 200 cars full of Aussies.... we are well on the way to that GOAL...
