new problem - rear wheel turns about ten inches either way then locks, but the engine hand cranks 360 degrees. The rear is on blocks. I thought if it was the bendix that the engine would also lock when hand cranked. Any suggestions.

It would , check your brake rod adjustment , or your brakes fell apart inside the Drum

good thought, but there are no breaks in the drum. The wheels are pushed all the way in, and lightly screwed on. The lever is set all the way forward in high gear.

The rear wheels are up on blocks? Both wheels? When you move one wheel does the other one move? Engine rotates 360 with the parking lever forward. When you hand crank it, does either rear wheel turn? If neither rear wheel turns The problem must be behind the transmission. Most suspect thing would be ring and pinion gear locked up. You can remove the top plug in the driveshaft tube over the u joint and see if the driveshaft turns when you rotate the engine. If it does, your problem is within the rear axle assembly.

Norm, I took your thoughts and elaborated and found it is the hub bolts that are too long! Now I just have to grind them down. Thanks.

Pull the wheels off spin the axle. With channel locks or vice grips ? And place the e brake lever at 12 o'clock
