Today The motoring world lost Australia's living legend Sir jack Brabham at 88 years. We all know of his world beating success and how he changed first the formula one scene then he delivered that same huge change at Indianapolis. Jack the engineer driver from down under knew where the engine in a racing car should be, then he went on to win three world Formula One world championships the 1966 in a car of his own construction with an Australian built Repco Brabham engine. Prior to designing the Brabhams Aussie Ron Tauranac built RALT cars the first of which had a Model T steering box.. Dan gurney is the only other modern era driver to win a F1 race in his own car but not a world championship.

I am sorry to hear of his passing.
I met Jack at the US Grand Prix in Watkins Glen many years ago.
I remember the intensity in his eyes

I met Jack at Oulton Park in Cheshire, the same year that Lotus introduced the 12 Formula One car, he was still with Cooper and they had a brief row in the paddock. In those days the young enthusiast could get into the paddock during practice. The hard words lasted about five minutes then they laughed and went on to win the Gold Cup. He signed my program, I wonder where that went? I think it was 1958, but could have been a year either way. No pictures as I was a pennyless student and film was a real expense. How much has Formula One changed, not all for the better....
