I have a hand cranked coil tester that I believe is a service station supply model (or similar). I just got it put together and when cranked at moderately fast speed I get about 2-2 1/2 volts on a Simpson 260. Is this enough voltage to test and adjust coils? Thanks in advance, Richard

Richard.
Yes that is sufficient HCCT voltage for coil testing.
If you need help getting your HCCT working let me know. I have restored over 75 HCCT's
If you send me a photo I can positively ID the type/manufacturer of your HCCT.

Thanks Ron, here is photo of my coil tester.
I had to make the spacers and mount the spark ring and I also had to make the coil holder and contacts for it and then wire it.

Notice the SSE Co stamped on the face of the spark ring. This HCCT was made by Service Station Equipment Company.
Over the years I have restored a few of this type.

Nice find

Ron, I have a question about what is connected to the timer terminal on a coil when testing on a HCCT. I have a home built HCCT and have that terminal connected to ground. The tester seems to work OK but I got to thinking that maybe that is not correct?????

Willie
Most HCCT's have the timer terminal wired through the ac Amp meter to ground.
Some have the timer terminal tied directly to ground and the Amp meter is wired into the coil bottom power terminal through the meter to the magneto.
It make no difference as the primary winding current is the same anywhere in the circuit.

Thanks Ron, I thought I wired it correct. There was some discussion on what speed to turn an HCCT and that made me think about the timer terminal wiring.
My HCCT is actually driven by a variable speed motor and I select the speed I want it to run. It is built with real magneto parts and a brake drum for a spark indicator. It has an amp gauge, volt meter and an RPM meter.
Thanks again for the quick response.

Hi Ron, need a meter like the one in your picture. I have a new hcct but it was unfortunately missing the meter. Do you have any available for sale?

Thanks,

Chris
