All this talk this weekend about the rear diff has me thinking about something i noticed on my T. With one tire locked, how much play should there be in the other tire rotating it back and forth? I know that there needs to have some play there for normal operation especially for cornering. I have at least 1 1/2 inches of travel, is this normal or something to worry about? The rear axle was rebuilt by a very reputable guy here in Ma., but that was back in 87.

As long as there is no looseness between the axle and wheel hubs I would not worry about it. It is likely just the normal play in the spider gears.

Jim, i recently pulled the bearings to replace the inner oil seals and repack the bearings, and there is absolutely no play in the axles. Hope that is a good sign.

1-1/2" sounds good to me. It's less than most T's have.
