I have tried the classifieds with no luck. I know it is wrong, but thought I might try here. I need a aluminum T shaped exterior door handle for a 21 coupe.Dig thru your extra parts and find me one. Please.
Is this the style you are looking for? My 22 coupe and 22 center door as well as my 26 TT used this style handle. The coupe and center door were casting in aluminum with a steel square shaft and the TT handles were cast in pot metal and are different on the inside from the coupe's shaft so the inside handle can be attached and also holds the handle in place on the door but I do all of them all in aluminum since the TT handles were painted black after casting and will out last the pot metal ones. Some of the repros handles didn't use a steel shaft but cast whole thing in aluminum handle shaft as one piece including the shaft. This has been a problem with the shaft getting twisted off in use. This might be the reason they aren't being listed by some of the vendors now. If you are missing the door handle you are probably missing the escutcheon plate also that is held on the handle with a snap ring. This escutcheon is what hold the handle in place on the door. This plate also has to have a brass bushing in the center since aluminum turning on an aluminum handle would gall and just wouldn't work. These steel shafts pictured are longer when cast and then are cut to the right length later.
I stopped casting them once I saw vendors were carrying them and cheaper then I could make them for but then I heard that they weren't machined or polished and didn't have the steel shaft as used as produced on the original handles and the same way I was making them but I never went back to making them. I don't think any of the vendors had the escutcheons available either. It's been awhile since I cast any but I might have a couple on the shelf yet. Bob
On the left is the TT escutcheon and the coupe's on the right. The TT's was originally made in steel but I cast them in brass since they were too hard to fabricate them out of steel plus the brass wears better and they get painted anyway.
The TT handles look the same on the outside but the shape is completely different on the inside In the picture of the original used as a pattern has a large build up on the handle's inner shaft so the aluminum will completely surround the steel shaft without cold shorting when poured and then machined down to the correct diameter later.
Bob -- The 21's had what is called a "T" handle, which has equal lengths of handle on either side of the handle's main shaft. The 22's and later had an "L" handle, which is what you pictured.
Thank's Bob. About 4 years ago,I gave a friend one of the correct handles and two of the ones you show, He never used them but his storage looks like some place from American pickers. He is looking tor them and hopefully he will find them. If not I may contact you.
The only other T style handle for a T that I have reproduced was this one but I believe it was for an earlier year T then a 21.
I have done the oval style for T's also this one is similar to the T but actually it's slightly larger and goes to a Packard. I couldn't find my picture of the one for the T. Bob
