I know there is a lot of brain power on this forum!
I'm having a problem trying to slide the bendex over the woodruff key. one end of the key tilts upward preventing the bendex from sliding over the woodruff key.Is there any way to prevent the end of the key from tilting up? Any help would be very appreciated! Thanks in advance.
Tom

The key may be to high. You might have to file a little off the top so it doesn't rock.

Make sure the key is seated fully in the keyway in the starter shaft and that there are no burs in the keyway on the drive head.

When the Bendix drive head is on the shaft and the key is tilted upward as you describe, simply take a small drift and hammer and tap the key down into the keyway in its proper location.
That will remove the bind that is created when this happens and the drive head may be moved further onto the shaft.
If you still have trouble give me a call.

When I tapped the key with a hammer and drift it just pushes the bendix to the rear.

I tried it both ways with the old key and a new key.

Tom...Dan Hatch (who has tons and tons of experience) and I just put the starter back on my car yesterday. It took a while to get it just right and then it just when back on. I guess it's one of those hit or miss things.

Check the key way. Something is amiss.

That key should set down easy and the Bendix drive slides over it.
