I need some brass screws for the starter ring gear. Which ones do I order? They have some for re-pros , and some for??? Maybe originals. How do I know which I need? Don't know if I have original or re-pro. What is the difference?
Bill -- Original ring gears have #14x24 threads. The repops have 1/4"x24 threads. Try a 1/4x24 bolt in it and see whether it's a good fit. It should screw in easily and be snug, not sloppy.
Oops, seems like the sloppy part is the other way around. I think the #14 is slightly smaller than 1/4". So if a 1/4" bolt goes in easily, you have the repop gear. If not, you have an original with the #14 threads.
The #14 thread is only for original Ford ring gears.
Maybe you can see Ford script on the ring gear if original one.
The 1/4" are used for re-pop gears.
Wish the re-pop gears would be stamped with legend "use only 1/4" x 24 screws"
What happens when you used NOS Ford brass #14 x 24 screws on a re-pop ring gear without warning.
The Ford screw on left....note the thread tears down in the 1/4" x 24 hole, and will let the magnets plates get loose! Used the 1/4" x 24 on the right side to fix the problems. Ugh!
#14 x 24 on left.
New repo ring gears come with 14 pitch threads . I think you can get it with 1/4 x 20 if you didn't run magnets.
I just stock the 14 pitch ring gear when magnets are NOT used, just tap the threads out to 1/4 x 20.
I thought the ring gears with the wrong threads were going to be used up fairly soon.
Wasn't the vendor going to correct the size in the newer runs of the gear? Or so I thought.

According to the current web sites of Lang's, Mac's, and Synder's....the reproduction ring gears are all special 1/4" x 24 thread.. and the brass screws, 1/4" x 24 are only for the "Non-Ford ring gear".
No repro gears or repro brass screws are made to Ford original specs for thread!
Check your thread count, seems to me there are some 1/4 28's out there.
