What products are available to simulate brass coating on metal?

I guess it depends on how much area you are covering and how smooth a finish that you want. There may be paint in a brass color in a spray can. If not, Home Depot carries paint under the Martha Stewart name that probably is available in a brass. They have a pretty good on in copper. They are brush on paints, though.

Metallic gold spray paint, then coated with matt clear enamel. Looks like brass....

Painted steel pedal trim plates.

If you have access to automotive paint you can reproduce brass color so well it is virtually impossible to tell its not brass.

Metallic paint will pass a distance view but not up close as the aluminium flakes show up dispersed amongst the gold color in sun light as you will notice if you look closely at gold colors on vehicles.

The flake is not needed if pearl tinters used in a 3 part paint system are used. They are so fine they are basically powder (some brand paints actual supply the tinter as a powder which you weigh out to measure the amount needed)

The first coat is white followed by the gold pearl tinters and finally a clear coat. These tinters are most often seen in white colors which show as white but in sunlight throw a pearl effect of a different color ( green, blue, red, yellow etc)

George, I hope you're not planning on painting over the brass you've got on your cars. Brass that's even in terrible shape can be brought back, it just takes a bit of work. Or if all else fails, send it to a plating shop and have it re-plated. I would never paint "real" brass. JMHO

What are you wanting to paint brass? If a small item, you can gold leaf it. Jim Patrick

I'm not painting over brass. I'm trying to determine if some of the metal parts that Henry coated in brass can be painted.

I've used the same system that Dan outlined above. It works well and looks good. The first time I didn't clear spray and the metallic gold will oxidize over time. Easy to redo though.

George,
Go to your local Ace hardware and purchase their Ace brand of metallic spray paint in the color identified as "Brass". Cost is around $4.95 and the color is perfect. I use this paint when I restore swivel joints since it is so difficult and expensive to "flash" brass plate the pot metal swivel body.
Hope this helps,
Russ Furstnow
