does anyone have a schematic showing the correct placement for the top webbing straps? i see them with two longitudinal straps and others with cross straps between bows and others with two full length cross straps. rather confusing. thanks

Stu-
There is one center strap, and the two pads at the corners of the bows. Then there is a X between each bow. The center strap bisects the X so it looks like an six-pointed asterisk.

The straps are 2" wide finished. They are made from top material that is folded with the shiny part inside and up. Originals were made from material cut about 3" wide with 1/2" folded and stitched along each side. You could do a full 1/3 fold (like folding a letter) to beef-up the strap if you'd like.

I'll e-mail you some more pictures.

Are you going to do the top yourself or have someone sew a top for you?

Keith

I do early tops and leather interiors, and getting the straps to match the tension of the pads and the top is sometimes a trick...so as you position things, you may wish to leave the straps a little long and temporarily tacked in place before you nail it down solid, to make sure it all works together.

I usually do the tri-fold, cut the top fabric a little less than three times finished width of fabric, double fold and sew each side (one side stitch captures the inner fabric end, the other side captures the outer exposed edge, both stitches through three layers of material)
