I have an unidentified two piece drive shaft. The tube including cast (forged) ends measure 42 inches long. It appears that the pinion gear is peened to the drive shaft There is NO pinion bearing housing.1234

Nice stuff, those who have seen this early stuff in real life can tell if it's NRS or 1909 Model T up until serial# 7000..

My guess was that it came from a pre T. N-R-S Ford.
I hope someone on the forum can help me pin point the year and model it came from.

Its not a 1909 T Ford. My 1909 measure's 49 3/4" the way that you are measuring.

So it's not a 1909 T. Can anyone tell me what year and model it is from? Does anyone have a Model N-R-S drive shaft and housing pic?

likely R or S shaft.

Photo from instruction book. The R & S used 84" wheelbase, so length is right.

Thanks Dan. That helps me. Does anyone else have a clearer photo of an N-R-S drive shaft tube?

If you go to the early ford registry site, there are lots of photos. It'll take some searching, but they are there under photos. There are a couple of distinct style of NRS driveshafts. Most did not have a bearing at the gear end, but several known examples do. Not sure if it was something done for a restoration of not.Generally, when a car is restored, guys use T parts inside , as easier to procure, and better steel in them. The value is in the tube and ball end. I have recast a bunch of ball ends as they are often very tired, or just missing. You have a needed item there . Good luck.

What holds the gear on the end of the shaft? Dan

Dan, it's the end of the drive shaft that is riveted over to hold the gear. A rare example of where the cheap method came first and was later replaced with a costlier (but more service friendly) method.

Does the gear have teeth cut in it for the shaft to fit on? Dan

Dan: The shaft and gear have a woodruff key set up but the axle is not tapered.

Should have said drive shaft, not axle
