The previous owner of my 1924 touring / pickup conversion had all of the demountable rims powder coated gloss black. At some point, I would like to strip them and get them hot dipped galvanized per the discussion in a recent thread.

I've never stripped off powder coating, has anyone else done it? What is the best method?

Thanks.

Heavy duty paint stripper, followed by light abrasive blasting. Done it many times.

R.V. is right good paint stripper, put on a thick coating, works best if left a while so it can soak in. If it is hot cover the stripper with plastic wrap to help stop it drying out.

Powder coating is just a paint but instead of being a liquid which drys to form a solid its powder which is heated to melt it into a solid coating.

I can be stripped off using caustic solution in a hot tank pretty much like paint. It can also be roughed up and painted with most any acrylic paint since it basically is an acrylic finish that is put on in dry form and then heat melted to make it stick.

you can burn it off with a propane burner, then just sandblast. this is how the powder coaters do it .charley
