What type of fit should the front spring be, to the brace it mounts into. Wobbly loose, snug, tight? Before being bolted in.

There is a leather or rubber pad which goes at the top of the spring. That pad is about 1/8 inch thick with a hole in the center for the bolt head. The U bolts or bracket will be tightened to hold the spring in place. It should be tight after the nuts are tightened and cotter pinned.

I would say a loose fit. It just drops in, but as mentioned above be sure your pads are ok.

The spring should slip somewhat snug into the cross member. The clamps that hold it in the frame should be tight and the nuts cotter pinned.
