What's the difference between these two steering sun gears? Can I replace the one with the long tail with the shorter one in a 1913/14 steering column?
I have never noticed the longer shaft version. Seems like the gears are the same! so the short shaft should be a suitable replacement. Maybe it is yet another very early Model T variation.
I understand the "long" shaft to be early as it also had two keyways. Same gear - 4 to 1.
I'm assuming it was yet another cost cutting step in lowering the cost of production and increasing profits.
Steve, Thanks! I just wanted to make sure the long shaft in a 1913/14 column could be swapped out with the later short shaft single keyway unit without adding a Grim Reaper problem. Steering is right up there with braking on the driving old iron safety list.
I'm going to verify the gear case length of the early, riveted cases to that of the later one piece - I have both on hand - back in a bit !
