1917 model year continued to use leatherette over cardboard. That's what is in my unrestored '17 roadster and what was in my dad's '17 touring that he purchased unrestored in 1949 from the original family.

My car dates to May 1917 while my father's dates to July 1917 which was the last month of the 1917 model year.

you want black water proof panel board. you should be able to get it from any upholstery supply house. I have used it for years . even if you cover them you still need this. charley

I have an original Ford door panel, NOS. It is much more grainey than what is available today.

About 20 years ago the local upholstery supply company had some grained, finished cardboard. It had two problems--too thin & was light grey! Solution: glue to another piece of cardboard, and use black flex-paint to make it look right.
Haven't seen it since. . . .
