This what you'll fine if you look up "Unconditional love" in the dictionary and this is way a dog is a man's best friend. Halley never complains about anything (especially my driving) and is always the first one in the T when I want to go for a ride.

Happy motoring.

This picture was taken many years ago of a neighbor. He was my best car buddy's boss and the reason that my Model T came into my life. This particular T was a 1921 Runabout with some details changed to "brassify" it.

The white boxer is Dudley. He was attracted to the T like a magnet. All it took was for his master to step on the running board and Dudley came bounding out of the house into the garage and scuttled right up into the copilot's seat. Once started up and under way, Dudley would sit bolt upright looking forward and watch the world float by as the T clattered down the street.

I'll never forget that sight.

I probably will get most of you upset, but I consider dogs a "Pain in the Butt". There are enough things around the house that need taking care of without a darn dog making a mess and requiring attention. Cats and other pets come in the same category.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Eric Sole - Castelldefels (Spain) on Saturday, August 02, 2014 - 01:22 pm:

Hey Willie, I've got three dogs at home and love them very much. Even so, I have my moments when I consider them to be "a pain in the butt". I have to admit that my Model T falls in the same category.

The important thing is that you recognize that you don't go in for dogs and cats, which means you won't buy/adopt one and then later abandon it. That in itself is a noble and wise act.

Know thyself.

And the bad news is you get in all sorts of trouble if you put them down !

Willie "I probably will get most of you upset, but I consider dogs a "Pain in the Butt", everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so I have no problem with what you said. As for me I could not disagree any more. No matter how you treat, or how badly you act a dog's love is always unconditional. They will always be waiting for your return home with a love that will never end.

Happy motoring,

Dr. Warren

Willie is right; pets are troublesome, If you think about it, so is every thing else around you. The dang remote needs batteries. The light in the kitchen is out again. The car has a flat. The kid is asking for money again. I could go on but the point is, do the benefits of having these things out weigh the negative aspects of having them? In the case of pets I think numbers bear out that most people enjoy owning them. I have a little dog that is plenty of trouble but I sure was sad when I lost him for a few days last fall.

I sure miss my chocolate lab. She LOVED to ride in the T. She would sit up front with me unless my wife went. Then, she had to sit in the back or worse yet, in the bed of the TT if that is what we were driving. She couldn't comprehend why she was being relegated to the back seat. After all, she thought she was my best girl. No doubt she loved me. I want another dog, but I'm afraid the new dog would not measure up and that wouldn't be fair to the dog. Perhaps it's not time, yet.

I once had a Basset Hound that liked to help me work on the car. I was laying in a similar position as you one day and with very greasy hands, reached for a rag that I knew was laying about arm's length away. I found it and wiped some of the grease from my hand, but then realized it wasn't a rag. It was Wilbur's ear.

We have a 9 year old Toy Poodle that is so much a part of our lives. Our only mistake was not bring home 2 instead of one.

There is nothing better than coming home to the greetings you get even if you are gone but a few minutes. The LOVE AND DEVOTION is unconditional. There is not much better than having a DEVOTED friend jump into your lap when you are tired or down a bit. They know and want to make things ease.

I modified a saying that was given to us. It hangs on our wall for all to see. He has not taken a ride in the T yet maybe due to the fact there is no AC vent to stick his nose in.

Bob, I'm a cat guy, too. We have an inside and an outside cat. Then my son moved and brought over his inside and outside cat. He has since come and got the inside one, but he's afraid to take the outside cat to his new place in town for fear she'll get run over. So I guess we now have two outside cats. His is most certainly a shop cat. You can't sit down in the shop without her getting in your lap. As a matter of fact, you have a hard time sitting down in the shop at all, since she's usually in your chair.

Is that "behave badly" ? "Behave well" ? I am better at the former than the latter. At least in certain crowds. :-)

I often refer to dogs as "suckweasels", as that is what they really are. The "dog" name adds some civility or sophistication to the image, but the truth be known, they're only after a crack at our cheese sandwich and would throw us under a bus if they knew that would deliver the cheese. DO NOT BE FOOLED ! :-)

John, I think Burger is having fun and enjoying the post as much as the rest of us. (1 dog, 3 cats) he's just mad about having to share his grilled cheese sandwich. Burger, I don't share my food with Halley, my wife does and when she is eating Halley will sit a her feet and wine, which will drive her crazy, but she will always give Halley food. Moral of the story, "do not feed your dog table food" and they will behave (unlike some I can mention).

Some people call them dumb animals. Nothing is further from the truth. They've got our number and read us like a book (as it were). They know exactly how to get what they want or need. Sometimes it doesn't work because we choose to ignore them, but animals are there communicating!

Well, might as well chime in here too. Been a dog lover all my life...can't say enough about 'em. This particular one is a lab/pitt, sweetest thing on earth. Loves to ride in any car, but we only let her ride in "her" car..the (sorry guys) Model A. She loves the big back seat, we love it that she can't maybe jump out after a cat or a squirrel, not that she would. When we get an enclosed T someday, that'll be her "new car"!
Difference between a dog and a kid is, when you discipline a kid, they pout at you, walk away from you (unless you send them to their room), even backtalk. A dog, though, will come back for more love than before.

This is Mae, she's an 8 lb miniature dachshund. Her nickname is "The Princess" as she is very regal and at times even stuck up. Lol, but she's really sweet and loves to ride as long as she can see. She LOVES socks, she doesn't tear them up or anything but she likes to take them from you when you take them off and hide them.

My wife took this as Mae was waiting for me to come inside after just pulling up from work. She's always thrilled when I come home. =)

This is a guilty face as I caught her trying to sneak by with one of my wife's crochet experiments - she likes these almost as much as socks. LOL, I should have taken a picture of my wife's face when I showed her this photo as Mae had to use some Black Weiner Ninja skills to get to where this ball/egg thing was.

LOL, my favorite Ninja skill is her silent sneak - she will deliberately walk funny so that her toe nails don't click on the hardwood or linoleum floors, it is hilarious to watch, especially when she is constantly looking around to make sure no one is noticing her.

I'm more of a sucker when it comes to sharing a little food. If I'm grilling chicken or steak Mae will usually get a little taste and let me know if it's any good or not. Thank goodness my wife doesn't check the forum cause she thinks SHE'S the guinea pig when it comes to something I'm grilling. Mae and I just wink at each other when I get a kiss for letting my wife try some before anyone else. Lol

I think this dog forum is getting more attention than most car post.
I still say the dogs come in the category of "Pain in the butt" and another term comes to mind, "sooner". The sooner you get rid of them the better off you are.
The Model T car is not in that category.

Pretty cat, Chris.

I don't know about traveling with a cat. I guess it would be OK. It's just nothing I've ever thought about doing. I had a boss that was into motorhomes. He had put a kitty door in somewhere so the cat could get down into one of the lower compartments, which is where they kept the litter box. He could empty the litter box from outside and never even have it 'inside' the motorhome.

I saw a trucker once who travelled with a chicken. No kidding! A CHICKEN! He backed up to the dock at work and got out with a chicken on a leash and walked it around in the grass while he was being unloaded.

I don't know much about chickens, but I find it had to believe they are capable of affection like dogs and cats. And for you NON-cat people, YES, they are capable of affection.:-)

G.R.--those Lab/Pitts are the best, aren't they? Cool how yours looks so much like mine. When ultimately and unfortunately this one goes to dog Heaven, our next, and the last (we'll be getting too old for any more by then) we'll definitely go with a full-bore Pitt....raise 'em right, and you can't ask for a better dog. Most misunderstood breed. Watch one episode of "Pitt Bulls and Parolees" on Animal Planet and you'll see what I mean.

Tim: My neighbour had one when I was a youngster and we called them "Nanny Dogs" she would put her toddler in the front yard and tell liberty to "Watch" If the kid got too far from the house the dog would pick her up by the diaper and bring her back (she would be laughing all the way) and if anyone came in the yard the dog would position himself between the kid and whoever it was and bark until "Mama" came out.

I do not hate dogs, but I do not want any in my house. I live in Texas and have a pasture full of cows that take up a lot of my time feeding and fixing those barb wire fences.
So many people seem too attached to dogs, don't they have family, grand children or someone they can spend time with. (wives and husbands also make great companions)
