I am a bit confused on how to set the backlash on the pinion gear with the fun projects pinion bearing set. I have the adjustable one.. There is nothing in the instructions how to set it up. Or do I still set it after I install?

The backlash seating is the same, you move the pinion gear in or out.

With the adj. style only difference is washer shims to place behind the gear to push it toward the ring gear.

Doing it the Ford way, just add some or take away some paper gaskets when testing the lash when fitting the drive shaft.

Like the paper gaskets better, as having a full taper fit on the pinion gear up the drive shaft is more important, even if the shims are just a few thousands, still IMO, the gear might set a bit proud on the drive shaft taper, seating the pinion gear fully on its taper is the strongest way to fit.

The pinion gear should first be centered on the ring gear. Then the ring gear is raised or lowered to get the right clearance.
