I have been with Hagerty for many many years. I was just talking to them about my move to Florida. And he mentioned I need to get trailer insurance. I have always assumed that with the full coverage I've already got with my cars the trailer insurance should've been included. He told me you cannot get full coverage and trailer insurance together. That's a little bit confusing as most of my stuff I trailer long distance and still drive. That does not make sense as most guys that I know that drive Model t's and other slower vehicles will trailer them to events and then drive them I can't believe that insurance does not cover the car while it's on the trailer also.
Will,
I THINK the confusion is in the fact that the towing vehicle insurance probably covers the trailer for liability, but not the the trailer itself nor the contents/load.
I'd call the company that insures your modern vehicles and see what's what.
Okay, I just called Hagerty again. I talked to a different person this time and she insured me that as long as the car is in my trailer the car is covered not the trailer so that was that was the confusion. All these years I had assumed that my car was covered inside the trailer. I have a feeling that possibly the gentleman misunderstood me and thought I was asking about the trailer itself. Am I ever glad I got that cleared up! For just a moment I had seriously considered changing insurance companies.
Just checked with Hagerty here in Ontario Canada, and they assured me the car is covered when being on a trailer. Might be different in the US!
Wilf
As a side note, when I got my trailer I called my regular auto insurance company. They said that the trailer was included under the liability insurance for the car, but I would need a separate rider for comprehensive on the trailer. It's a few dollars a year, but I figured that being stolen is probably the trailer's highest risk.
You might find that insurance varies from state to state. Check with the insurance company which insures your towing vehicle to be sure that insurance covers the trailer while being towed. If not, you will need to get insurance to cover the trailer.
