Michael,

The WPA produced a State Guide for each state during the Depression, South Carolina included. I bought the Michigan edition and it is absolutely packed full with information on old towns, old parks and, germane to your interest, old roads. If you were to obtain the SC edition, no doubt you would be able to easily figure out what area Route 1 was.
