OK I know that if something does not seem to fit right, it is probably wrong. I am rebuilding and rewiring an engine - never done it but I can follow advice and diagrams. i have new wiring and 4 different wiring diagrams to follow. Now, from the pictures, it seems that the 4 wires are on WRONG at the commutator timer and they will bind ??

Please see the pictures ??

It also seems the wire bundle will be hitting the fan belt ???

David,

How they go depends on the year. Firewall coil box goes one way, coil box on engine/improved car similar but different.

Start with this...

Here is a picture(s) of how the wire harness fits This while connected as per the diagram can not be correct as the wires will bind and hit the fan belt ? Also the wire bundle lays across the top of the head ???

This isn't mine, but it sure does look like an elegant way of running the wires.

You men can laugh at me later. The solution is probably as simple as last week when I spent 3 hours rewiring the GFCI garage outlet because the garage door would not open, only to later discover someone had unplugged the garage door motor from the ceiling outlet ! Any help appreciated.

This can not be right wires at bottom are too long ??wire bundle too tight across top of the head ??

Bob yes, it looks like the wire loom is coming in from the 0ne o'clock position unlike mine coming down across the top of the head

Here is a 2013 thread on the subject, apparently there is a clip that helps hold the wire harness back away from the belt.

WOW thank you all soo soo much Mark the diagrams are great ! Also who would know I need to build a retaining clip ? Now I wish instead of advanced math and science in High School I had taken SHOP !!!

Really thank you all so much Now I am going to have a glass of wine, stop work it is getting dark and start at 630 AM with a cup of coffee. My wife is patient but this car has been in her garage for a year !

You're welcome! :-)

Actually, after studying the drawing more carefully, it looks like two T-7688 clips are used on the timer harness, and two more T-7688 clips hold the headlight harness to the left frame rail. The headlight harness is also held to the front crossmember by by three T-7689 clips.

Here's a nice diagram that sometimes helps.

Some of those particular wiring diagrams had mistakes in them regarding coil wiring. Pay attention to the correct firing order.

David: I may be WRONG but it looks like you have the wrong end of the harness attached to the coil box I am at work now so no pictures but my harness starts at the rear of the coil box and goes forward then down to the timer If you still need them when I get home I will take pictures of mine I just hope my explanation makes sense.

Well up. coffee in hand,, read the GREAT posts and pictures.. Conclusion,, the wiring harness is too short,, I may have the wrong end connected to the coil box (but the ends looked identical, and I need to install the fan to the block before proceeding

Run the wires on the coil box so they face the front of the engine, you have them facing the firewall.

Thanks all I think you have solved the simple problem. On my way to the hardware to buy brass to make the brackets (and find some replacement water fan outlet bolts )

The clip to hold the harness between the coil box and the timer goes on the LH water outlet bolt.
LH is the side opposite the manifolds.

Ken

Correct, the clip is on the water outlet bolt, and one on the timing gear cover bolt, these are large hole clips,#5033, Lang's sells reproductions, pretty close to the originals.

I wasn't aware of the one on the timing gear cover bolt.
Got a pic?
