Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2014: Splash Shield Bolt/Screw Query Continued.......

I am cleaning up the bolts, washers, nuts and screws to the 1927 Tudor's splash shields. On most of them (not all - things probably dropped off and were replaced over the years by what was on hand), this is what I found connecting the splash shield to the fenders and running boards:

*1" x 1/4" bolt with 20 tpi
*Two flat washers that went on either side of the mount (much smaller hole than a modern washer)
*One lock washer with grooves
*One large square nut that a 1/2" wrench fits on loosely

The top side of the splash shield was held to the floor boards by two Robertson wood screws (the car was made in Canada, so there are Robertson "square drive" screws throughout).

My questions are:

1) Is this the correct bolt-washer-lock washer-square nut set up?

2) How many screws mount the splash shields to the floor boards?

Thanks.

- Jim

Jim, on our Canadian sourced cars, the splash apron to fender bolts are 1"x1/4" but they have an unusually small head on the bolt. I will check, but from my suspect memory, the nuts were hex nuts, but larger across the flats than the bolt head!!

Alan:

Only one bolt had the nut you are talking about. I don't supposethose are still manufactured?

Jim, I checked on some nuts/bolts in my stash. I have a tin with some as removed from the car, bolt, two flat washers, spring washer and nut, all screwed together. Nothing is usual in size. These are 1/4" coarse thread. Bolts have 3/8" heads rather than usual 7/16". Nuts are 1/2" and a little thinner than usual 7/16" Washers are 3/4" od. I am presuming the washers are fitted either side of the panels to accommodate the slotted holes used to make fitting easier. When fitted the nuts are to the inside on the car.

Hope this helps.
