Can you imagine an old goat like me learning a new system? My Son the electronics fanatic got a new device of some sort and did me a "favor" and gave me his I Pad. Thought for a while I'd take the tail pipe but I'm actually getting the hang of this old new tangled device. Starting to almost be fun. Welcome to the 21st. Century I guess! So long Vista!

The day you stop learning something new should be the day your dead.

Charlie, as a dedicated Apple employee, I have to point out that it is an iPad not an I Pad!

My spin law gave me his old one, refurbished, when he bought the latest version. Now I have an iPad, laptop and a desk top. All I want is the web and email.....
By the way, iPad shows up a possible spelling error....

Tony, I noticed the spell checker high lighting iPad. If you use any Apple software, it will show an error if you do not spell it iPad. Same with iPhone. We must be using a Windows based server. Damn you Bill Gates!

Tom, I like my iPhone 4S. Just loaded iOS 8 and 8.0.2. Performance seems to be getting pokier. Is it my imagination, or time for iPhone 6 ?? How come I cannot send photos to Samsung users in a text message or they to my iPhone. I googled a solution, but could not find one in the 10 minutes I devoted to it. W

I'm not buying one of those fancy smart phones until they incorporate a real mechanical rotary dial !

I have a regular phone in my shop and usually don't answer it if I'm working. If it's important, they'll call back. Besides, 9 calls out of 10 it's somebody wanting to sell me a burglar alarm or a mobility scooter.

One of my friends once told me his phone was for HIS convenience, not the caller's.

Dick

I keep pretty up to date just to keep up with my kids. I use my smart phone for all kinds of stuff and will probably upgrade to the iPhone 6 very soon. I use twitter quite a bit (I get all the latest Shorpy pictures sent right to my phone!). It's not hard to do, really, and it's mildly addicting.

Hi Tom (Magee), Microsoft loves to control everything. I have said repeatedly that I wish that there was an icon for "type it exactly the way I want it." Windows is constantly trying to correct things that I want as I typed them. Aaraggh!

I had an app that did that for a while. It had a rotary dial on the screen that you could use.

I work on a large construction site. Recently an iPad was stolen from one of the lunch rooms. When the thief turned it on it took a photo of him and sent it to the owners email. Owner sent email to management. Management searched room, recovered iPad and the thief lost one of the best paid working class jobs in the country.
Now that's technology!

Les V. & Tom Magee - Spell check is a handy thing I guess. However, I think there is one very bad aspect of depending too much on the "spell check" feature on any computer or word processing device:

There are many brilliant professional and business people, up to and including CEO's of large corporations that on rare occasions, have to correspond via computer, like when their secretary is unavailable for instance, and what they write ends up looking like it was done by a below average 3rd grader! (...one reason for secretaries, right?) Because some brilliant business people rely too much on "spell check", they don't realize (or stop to consider) that spell check does not care if, for example, you write,....you or you're,.....too, to, or two,.....there or their, or, even on this forum (which really doesn't matter) brake or brake,.....felloe or fellow,.....steel or steal, etc, etc,....

My point is, if you rely too much (NOT to much) on spell check, you're (NOT your) going to fall into a habit of putting out correspondence that looks like a below average 3rd grader wrote it. I always feel like how a person writes is a reflection of their intelligence, but of course, there are some people that just don't care, and I suppose that doesn't really matter either,...FWIW,....harold

Actually, in re-reading what I just wrote, which I guess turned into sort of a rant, I should say that I'm certainly not one to criticize as my writing certainly leaves a lot to be desired, especially my "use", or, "mis-use", or "abuse" of punctuation! And I've made the same mistakes for so long that I'll probably never improve either! Oh well,.......harold

I recently bought a new computer and the writing program is much more insidious than any I've seen before.

On my prior computers, the spell checker would place a red underline on any word it thought incorrect and suggest possible correct spellings. I could accept a suggested spelling or keep what I had.

But my new computer simply inserts a new word of its own choosing and then doesn't underline the word to attract my attention. If I make a typo the computer substitutes the closest matching word (regardless of context), again not underlining to attract my attention.

So here I am back to where I was with my old Underwood typewriter. Carefully read the text backwards and examine each word for accuracy. And worse yet, then reading forward, hoping to catch correctly spelled words not of my choosing.

Can I just turn the spell checker/fixer off ? Not as far as I can tell. The software writers are so much smarter than me, why would they let me do that ?

Dick
