Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2014: Shifting a Ruckstell at Speed

Yesterday at the Newport Hill Climb in Newport, IN the speedster drivers seemed to be shifting the Ruckstell under speed. Would it have been possible that they were keeping the Ford tranny in high and starting in low ruckstell and then shifting directly into Ruckstell while accelerating? Is that possible?

Mike

Mike, Is it possible they were starting in low ruckstell and Ford low then shifting to Ford high in low Ruckstell an then to Ruckstell high while in Ford high where you couldn't hear them burp the throttle?

Ruckstells are rather forgiving about speed matching. HOWEVER, if you make a habit of shifting without appropriate throttle adjustment (which can be fast enough to almost not be heard), you will destroy the bronze spline in the big plate inside the Ruckstell and damage several other parts. Best to learn to do it right.

Mike,

You certainly CAN start from a stop in Ford High with the Ruckstell in Low. During the Texas T Party Royce Peterson said his low band went out and he shifted that way all the last day.

As far as starting out from a stop, in Ford planetary high and Ruckstell (low), yes it can be done and often is done by many people. The Muncie underdrive in my speedster is slightly lower than a Ruckstell low (making it easier on the car), and I often use it simply by easing the clutch out into planetary high. Then I wind it out a bit, shift the Muncie into direct, and away I go.
Many T drivers prefer the method of downshifting the Ruckstell as they pull to a stop. Then starting out with just a touch of low band, quickly shift to planetary high, wind up a bit, then final shift the Ruckstell into high (direct). (Sort of a three speed method)
Drive carefully, and enjoy, W2

Here is one out of several older threads about Ruckstell shifting:

Just remember to shift into Ruckstell low while the engine is pulling - if you suddenly want to shift into low while going down a steep hill for better engine braking, it may be impossible.

Kenny,

I really couldn't tell what they were actually doing. Just wondering if that could be what was being done.

As far as the Hillclimb, I've only done it twice. That was only to get out town, so I wasn't really competing:-) Just a way to get out of the congestion! Now I have a better way.

I just go to look at the cars and watch others abuse their engines:-)

Take Care,
Mike
