Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2014: Hood Shelf Notch with Body Support - What Is This?

I wire-wheeled the passenger side hood shelf tonight and got a closer look at the notch in the hood shelf. I had noticed it in the past, but really never questioned it until I inspected it tonight. Someone in the past made a rough-cut notch to account for a body support which mounts to the frame. There is also one on the driver's side. I am guessing, judging from the severed edge of the cut-out, that the hood shelf did not come from the factory this way. Was the body support a factory item? I am thinking that it must have been an accessory. Can anyone fill me in, please? Thanks.

I'm also curious about that.. I had to increase that notch myself in an original pair - but that was when fitting them to a 1925 frame.
I think the fastening holes for the firewall brackets were moved slightly between 1925 and '26, but haven't measured the exact difference.

Both my pairs of repro hood shelves also has the notches a bit too small for the firewall brackets so I haven't got any firewall brackets on my '26/27 runabout.
I've seen postings here mentioning the firewall brackets were omitted from production at some time in 1926/27 since they weren't needed with eight fastening points between the chassis frame and the body subframe in the improved cars.

my car was made in Canada in February of 1927. I wonder if the firewall braces were standard fare on Canadian cars American cars?

Those braces were on all the 26-27 cars. That hood shelf might be aftermarket, or maybe someone cut it differently, but the original has a notch for that brace.

Indeed all had notches, it's just that the notches doesn't seem to be large enough on some?

In this thread Tom Carnegie tells about his 27 Tudor that didn't even have the holes punched for firewall brackets: http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/331880/362721.html?1369022333

Norm:

Thanks for the info. So, can I gather that these shelves listed on e-bay are listed incorrectly as there is not a notch in them?
