Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2014: Headlight Disassembly

Again I am very new to the forum and have only owned my Model T for about a month now. I have slowly taking off bits and pieces that I feel comfortable with. I have also purchased the Red Model T restoration book from Clymer...great book.

I have taken the whole headlight apart so I can sandblast the outer housing. It looks like someone put JB Weld on the rope to keep it in place (not sure of that was done at the factory or not).

Everything came apart with a little WD40 and elbow grease.

Couple of questions for you folks.

1) What is the reflector material?

2) What is the material for the little elbow that sticks out the backside?

3) Does everything look right? I mean are they original parts or replacement parts?

I read a few posts about shinning up the reflector interior which I'm guessing is chrome plated..I'll try a few things but do not want to scratch it.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Chris in Fairhaven Massachusetts!

Originally the reflector was Silver plated, and very difficult to polish.

Your headlamp is the early style 1915-1917 as the focus screw for the bulb hold is vertical over the socket. Later buckets have that screw to the side of the socket.

That plastic socket plug is like a Bakelite, and that style has the angle used in 1915, its missing the cap, you can get repro ones now.

As for cleaning the silver plated brass reflector, use care. Wash first with warm water and soap to remove dirt that will scratch the soft silver. Don't rub! Only gentle, with warm water flowing rinse.

Then use a quality silver paste, and with long strokes from the center out, wipe, and then rinse. Don't rub or use a circle pattern within the concave reflector, only use straight line motion. Otherwise you will leave scratches in circles...and the image of the reflected lamp will be poor.

Good luck, most times the reflector will need to be re-silvered, check your local silver flatware stores that can re-silver pieces.

You can go to your local Ace hardware and buy the polishing cloths that work really well on the silver plated reflectors.
They carry a few other polishing compounds but for me the polishing cloths worked the best.
They come in a foil pouch and do a great job.

More than a few of T silver reflectors have been tossed that could have been polished and work really well.

Of course the reflector condition has a lot to do with the outcome but if its evenly tarnished has has a dulled out greenish color you will be surprised how it can be polished out.

When I took my second headlight assembly apart the large reflector spring broke apart and the headlight plug shattered into a hundred pieces.

Langs looks like they have a replacement headlight plug #6592X, double contact.

My old headlight plugs were 90-degrees and these new ones are straight.

Will they be okay for my T?

I would love to find an original headlight plug at 90-degrees to match the other one I have.

Please and thank you!

The spring is also available from the vendors, but I've read reports here at the forum about problems with non fitting repro springs - and an original shouldn't be hard to find at a swap meet or through the classifieds here.

I saw the 90-degree plug on Langs but at $40 I'll wait to see if anyone has an extra they are willing to part with.

Thanks again.
