Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2014: Nicknames for a Speedster?
Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Jon Allen on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 - 11:18 am:

Hey Guys,
What would be good names for a speedster? My '14 Runabout is named "Evangeline" after Henry Ford's girl friend, but T am looking for a cool name for a speedster that is under construction.
So send me suggestions. The car came from Louisiana, so I though of "Jambalya", but that is sort of a mouthful. Maybe "Gumbo"?
Anyway, anything is fair game.
Any suggestions appreciated.
Regards,
Jon

I don't think you can just give it a name, it just has to sorta happen. Out of the blue one day you will be driving along in it and poof there it is. :-)

Sort of fits the "poof there it is" philosophy.

For our Model T, my daughter picked "Penelope" out of a field of Brass-Era names like Adeline, Genevieve, Henrietta, Betsy, Agatha, Muriel, Alexandra, Ophelia, Priscilla, Gwendolyn, Felicity, Anabel, Gertrude, Wilhelmina, Harriet, Hazel, Esmeralda, Daisy, Constance, Agnes, Winnifred, Amelia, Mabel, Shirley, Scheherazade and Anastasia.

Add an alliterating adjective ("Ophelia Octane," "Gear-Grinding Gertrude," "Horseless Harriet," etc.) and you're set.

I named my 15 Runabout "Mrs. Beauford" (beautiful Ford) due to the "M B" body makers markings on the kick panel - then later found out Beauford was the name for some kit-car in the UK which would convert mid-sized Ford cars to into Duesenberg styled "classic cars"

I agree - the name just has to come along "poof-like" and fit the car's personality...

Nearly 50 years ago, my first Model A (30 Briggs body Town Sedan) became "Wilbur". How/Why? I have no idea where the name came from. The car was on the trailer and I looked in the rear view mirror (just checking) and said, "hey look, Wilbur is following us." So, you are correct Mark. Poof!

Ah no, Peter, too easy to mispronounce, especially when you're mad at it. I always like to name pets and vehicles words of only one or two syllables and begin with a consonant. Jon, will you be using a Scat crankshaft? "Scat" comes to mind, or maybe "Scoot". At any rate, have fun with it, the speedster and the name.

Scat could mean animal droppings (poop) on the ground. I wouldn't use that unless it fits. :-)

Dwight "Buck" Thomas. It both supprised him and made him proud.

Back when wifey had a Jaguar, and asked which car we would be going in, I'd say, "Let's take the Good Car (the T)." It earned the name, the Good Car.

There have been lots of "T's nicknamed "Henry" for Henry Ford, and lots of "Edsels" for Edsel Ford, but how about "HENSEL" to indirectly honor Edsel Ford equally with his father, in a way that Henry Ford would never have treated his son with "equality"!

Or, instead of "Hensel", which I thought sort of honors father & son about equally, you could slant the "honors" a bit less toward Henry, and a bit more toward Edsel (and Lord knows he deserves it) and call it "HEDSEL"! (???) Yeah! Looks good to me! A little more Edsel and a little less Henry!

Jon - This thread you started reminded me of something:

My grandfather had two cars,....a late model black Cadillac, and an older blue Plymouth that he bought used to drive back and forth to work,...(he was a railroad engineer).

He was a great one for "nicknames", and he called the Cadillac "the Black Mariah", and the Plymouth was the "Bluebird".

One of my long-time best friends had a Plymouth many years ago. It was always called the "Moth". Then he got a Pontiac. It was called the "Yak". He usually has a name for most of his cars. Some of them I won't put on this family friendly site.
Like others have said, I think names just need to come on their own (like poof!). I have only really named one of my antique automobiles. That was one of my speedsters. It was running great and seemed to really fly! So it became Jennifer, the formal version of a Jenny (early airplane).
Drive carefully, and enjoy, W2

With a tip o' the cap to the hilarious thread on the subject,
why don't you name it "The Polecat Special" (We call skunks
'polecats' in East Texas and Louisiana).

When folks look quizzically at you because of the name, you
can tell them "it goes like stink."

Haha!

As has been repeated through the thread: you can't get the name off of the forum. A real, genuine name or nickname for the car just has to happen. There's no timeline or deadline. Just drive her a lot and it will come. =)
