Gentleman,

This is Joel in California.

I sold my 23 Runabout last year like an idiot and now am trying to replace it the hard way. So I now have a 1918 chassis with what seems like a decent engine when I can keep it running. My question is this...I am considering installing a 3 gear Bosch setup I have had for a few years but the oil filler casting on the front plate hits and won't let the unit seat completely. Anybody here have some experience with these?

I think the Bosch magneto drive unit you have needs to use a special hard to find timing cover that makes it fit. There have been previous discussions on the forum about these, but I haven't learned how to link with my phone (yet). You can search the forum with google if you include "site:www.mtfca.com" .

Seth from NC is a forum participant who has and uses this kind of magneto drive - it has cost him lots in custom made new gears, but
but he is satisfied. I've made my own magneto drive out of flat iron for the magneto shelf on the LH side of the engine and bicycle sprockets and chain for the drive down from the crank shaft and I'm also satisfied - at a much lower cost :-)

Joel,

One of the threads Roger suggested is probably at: http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/257047/270216.html?1330765197 If you have that style magneto drive you need the front timing cover shown below (photo from that posting) that was produced by Bosch for that mag drive set up.

Or perhaps you have a different mag drive set up?

Respectfully submitted,

Back when I had one I did some searching not knowing about the special Bosch cover, what I came up with was to use the early cover with the small oil fill spout, which is about the same size as shown above. The one I got was for maybe 1912 just after the timer with built in oil spout was dropped and before the 1913 with longer fill spout came out.
OR!
Not knowing any better, it might have been a Bosch cover.
I never had the unit on my car but the parts seem to fit together.

I believe Kevin Pharis is reproducing these covers.
