Does anyone have any suggestions for cleaning the inside of the copper tank in the trunk of my 1924 coupe with suicide doors?

I don't think even a Canadian coupe would have suicide doors in 1924. Unless it has a home made gas tank it would be steel. If it's not home made are you sure it's not copper plated? I know Canadian T are different but...? maybe the same thing used to clean out brass radiator would work.

The car is probably late 23 but the tank is or looks factory solid copper

I am Third owner of car registered as 24. May or may not be 24 - May or may not be aftermarket however tank is still copper. Any suggestions how to get all of the black dead fuel parts out of tankIn about 30 seconds after shaking the 46 sheet metal screws around in the tank the fuel bulb will fill with black crap ( looks like the inside of a tobacco pipe that is not totally burned and packed the same way) I dig it out and do it again Using methyl hydrate as the liquid cleaner

If the "dead fuel parts" are loose I would flush them out with lots water with the tank out of the car. If the black material is not stuck to the tank there should be no reason to use any chemicals. If it is coating the tank, I've had good luck using acetone when cleaning old gas tanks.

Jim , I flushed the tank with hot water and it seemed to clear most of the dead fuel that had been loosened by the methyl hydrate. Removed permanently the plastic fuel filter, added an authentic fuel bulb with a clean screen and new fuel shut off with all new fuel line placed correctly. With a full tank of gasoline the car seems to run well. Thanks everyone for the helpful suggestionsimg0868jpg
