which ammeter works as it should instead of flicking while driving, annoying at best.

Is the needle "flicking" to charge, discharge or across both? Check all your connections and grounds. Perhaps the switch is loose too.

Ditto what John Page just said, if you want a "second opinion". Fantastic guage, top quality workmanship.

Davids profile shows a 26/27 so the Fun project meter will not help. Check connections. I use an old original and it works as it should.

David,

What are you using for a cutout? A traditional style cutout will sometimes "flutter", or oscillate, when engine speed is low, (at idle usually), and generator output is just barely enough to keep the points closed. This will make your ammeter needle also flutter. That sort of thing is fairly normal. I do see you mention "while driving", so maybe your situation is different. Maybe your cutout points are marginal and arcing while driving?

Thank you for those comments, cut-out, lam using a 22 amp voltage regulator on a 25 amp generator.

Before we wired up the voltage regulator the only thing connected was the battery, driving would see the ammeter flickering or needle bounce due to road vibration, engine vibration, any form of vibrations sends the needle off, -- both - and +
I'm just after a good ammeter preferably a ford version, that will actually read what's happening, not bounce all around.
I have a feeling the one currently in it is a cheapy...
