Gary, the best approach is to is insert the head of the rivet from the inside, cut off the shank a bit less than 1 and 1/2 the diameter of the shank from the pan and use a ball peen hammer to form the head on the outside with a torch. Here's an example re a two piece DS. Use the same approach with a pan. If you have a narrow 09 - 11 one piece pan, use flat head rivets or shave the top of the heads so they clear the mag coil. Done it a few times.
