We went into a Home Depot store today. Venturing up an aisle in the plumbing department, I saw one of those walk in hot tubs with a door that they advertise on TV. Just out of curiosity, we stopped and took a quick look at it, then went on about our business. A few minutes later, my wife receives an e-mail on her phone. FROM JACUZZI! Now, I suppose there are some folks who would say "Wow, what useful new technology! I really appreciate them knowing I was interested in this product and sending me this additional information on it." Then I suppose there are those who would say "Oh look another annoying SPAM e-mail. Let me hit delete." But I don't fall into either of those categories. It pissed me off! I don't appreciate being tracked. I don't like them knowing my e-mail address. I FEEL VIOLATED. She was kinda freaked out by it, but quickly got over it. I'M STILL PISSED. I don't know whether to be pissed at Home Depot or Jacuzzi, or both. I got a half a mind to let Home Depot know how pissed I am. Wonder if they would care if I told them I would never darken their damned door again? Probably not. The world is too full of the folks in category 1 above that they are probably not too concerned about the paranoid ones of us in Category 3.

Hal, any idea how they were able to obtain your e-mail address? Joe

Gives new meaning to the phrase "Big Brother is watching", doesn't it?

Questions...how did HD get your e-mail address? Do you have one of their Credit cards with your address already in their computer....and more, did you have a credit card with one of those "know everything" chips in it that "read" your arrival in the store as you entered?

Technology is great - can land a space vehicle on a comet/asteroid, but that same technology can be put to evil uses....ala 007's enemies!

Hal,

Was it an e-mail or a text message? VW set a movie house up so that it scanned all the cell phones that were on, captured their numbers and texted all simultaneously. I am wondering if HD employed similar technology. In my case, HD has my e-mail but I never give out my cell phone number to any corporation. Plus my cell phone is one that lacks web access and e-mail.

VW episode is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Gtio4V1L3o

I agree with you, I don't need this kind of shadowing.

It was an e-mail, not a text. She does have one of those credit cards with the chip in it. She asked me if it could be that, but I told her I didn't think so, but maybe I'm wrong. I had heard on the news that these stores could track you through your smart phone, but I thought you would have to have your GPS or WIFI turned on. Hers was not. I also thought they could only determine where in the store you were and just compiled data. I had no idea they could actually send you an e-mail. She has two e-mail accounts on her phone. They only sent it to one. I had left my phone at home, so I don't know if I would have gotten an e-mail or not. She did just tell me that the e-mail account they used was the one attached to her card. Maybe it was the card. Either way, I don't friggin like it!

walls to get a picture of you stepping out of the shower ! :-)

That technology has been around for a while. "They" can track you throughout the store as long as your phone is turned on. It logs where you go and where you pause in the store to look at something. When your phone is on, it broadcasts its ID to the nearest cell link or tower. There's equipment to capture this info in many stores. Your phone provider could be selling the info that links your email to the phone ID or it can be collected every time you email someone from your phone. They know where you live too but email is cheaper than sending snail mail advertising.

And you thought you owned the phone. :-)

I do not know if big brother is watching or not, but I have told many businesses that I do not have
internet access, and so far no one has corrected me. Does cut down spam, etc. So Hal, you can say I am one who agrees with you.

John

Oh, yes. There's also network trackers that don't need cookies now. They can identify your machine by the software and browser you use when surfing the net. They know every site you visit and collect info on what products you view. But... If you use Chrome or Google software, they know that already. :-)

If HD starts tracking where I spend the most time in their stores, they would install pay toilets!

I don't have a cell phone or a smart phone, so I don't get those types messages. However, I do have the old fashoned land line at home. Almost every day I get calls wanting me to get a device to call someone if I should fall, or some other senior device. I don't know how they find out we are seniors. We also get people who want to sell us solar energy, or new windows or just remodel our house. Another thing which annoys me is the people who call and then don't say anything. They don't answer my hello. Or they just hang up.

If I get a person, I usually tell them I am going to add them to my list of people I don't do business with. I tell them if they want to reach me send me a letter by U.S. mail. Then I will either read it or not at my leasure. I tell them my telephone is for family and friends, not for sales. It annoys me to stop whatever I am doing to answer the phone for a message I don't care to receive.

Another one is the people who speak with a very strong accent either Indian or mideastern. They say they are Joe Smith or some other typical American name. I tell them that they can't speak without an accent, please get someone who can, or don't call me anymore.

Now I have vented myself.
Norm

So Ken, you're thinking it is indeed the phone and not the credit card with the chip? If it's the card, there are wallets you can buy to prevent the RF signal from transmitting out. But if it's the phone, is there anything you can do to prevent it? Any function you can turn off?

It's the phone. And it doesn't use GPS, Bluetooth or Wifi. It uses the ID signal from your phone. If your phone is on, it emits this signal. That's how you can move from one location to another and link to an available cell tower anywhere in the US. The store equipment uses the same signal.

So what is surprising about this?

You are being watched by numerous entires.
Some are for commercial interests and other are by "big brother"
It is the reality of today.
Those people that don't understand are in the 18 th century

Sorry to be so blunt but it is the truth of today you are being watched!

I am in and out of Home Depot and Lowes quite often and I have never received an e-mail from them that was not solicited by me. I have a "smart phone" too. I think I would find the store manager have him explain to me what is going on!

I don't go into our local Home Depot any more since they quit giving veterans a discount a couple of years ago. Our Lowe's, across the street from HD does give me 10% off anything I purchase there, even if it's on sale already. And they usually thank me for my service.

We remodeled our kitchen and dining room last year and spent thousands of dollars at Lowe's, new appliances and all. I appreciate the fact that they appreciate us veterans.

I leave my phone in the truck when I go shopping. So I guess if they are tracking me they are wondering why this guy comes to their store two or three times a week and is afraid to get out of his truck. :-)

Garnet...reminds of a story...A text message received....

"Dear Neighbor Bill,

I am so sorry but I have a confession to make to you. I have been using and sharing your wife for several years. I usually await until you leave before trying anything as I don't want you to think a slowdown of your own speed might be due to me. I promise to stop and feel so bad about this! "

Bill in a fury gets out his shot-gun and makes his wife pay...

As the smell of gun powder clears he feels his cell phone vibrate again...

"Dear neighbor Bill,

Danged smart phone auto-correct! I meant w i f i and not w i f e!

Sorry! "
