The long pin goes in the hole which is centered in the groove in the steering box when the wheels are pointing straight ahead. That would corespond to the pitman arm being straight down and centered. Don't know anything about wheel dust.

Bob,

You asked "Are the 5 to 1 steering parts all marked 5 ?"

Answer: No. Not all of the individual gears are marked -- you have after market gears that may or may not be marked. And the 4:1 gears were normally not marked but some Ford replacement 4:1 gears were marked.

The “Model T Ford Service” book “T-1” is available online at: http://mtfci2002.readyhosting.com/manuals/Model_T_Service_Manual/mtsm.html and on page 181 and 182 it describes the different gears and how to tell which is which. The easy way is to remember the 4:1 gears are all the same diameter and have 12 teeth on all the gears but the 5:1 gear sets are different diameters with the center smaller pinion having 9 teeth each of the three outer pinions having 13 teeth. So even numbers of teeth for 4:1 and odd numbers for 5:1.

Excellent photos at: http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/118802/178734.html?1293727614

Be sure to assemble the extra long pin in the right spot see: http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/331880/355461.html?1367510671

Not all the after market replacement 5:1 gears / shafts fit properly see: http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/331880/352910.html?1365103141 but when it was pointed out to the vendor – they corrected the issue.

Good luck with your project.

Respectfully submitted,
