A few minutes ago the land line house phone rang. Caller ID said, "Not Available 16". Although I usually don't, I went ahead and answered it. There was the unmistakable clicking sound indicating it was a computer generated call being transferred to a person.

A heavily accented male voice asked if this is Cheryl (my wife's name). I said, "No". He asked if he could speak to her. I said, "She's not home". He said, "Hello Cheryl. You have been selected by the government to receive a $10,200 grant".

I hung up. Could there actually be anyone out there in this day and age dumb enough to actually engage in such a thing? It's hard to imagine it's worth the callers effort, but they sure do make that effort, indicating my opinion is wrong.

There must be people dumb enough to fall for it or it would have stopped back before there were dial phones...

Remember spinning the phone crank and waiting for a response?

Here's the one that I got yesterday.

"Hi Grandpa, this is your grandson... I said Hi, Which grandson? He said You don't know my name? I said no tell me your name and of course this amature older sounding voice hung up.

About a year ago my wife got the same call but a very polished caller. Saying with a perfect Irish brogue that he was Kyle, her grandson, and in trouble with the law in New York and please send money. He was very convincing until she asked him "When's your birthday? Of course that's when the caller hung up.

You must be very careful what info you give to callers on the phone. Never give out any info but rather call back to the business or credit card company.

I got the $10,000 government grant call on my cell phone yesterday.
It was from 202-000-0007.
I had a hard time understanding him because of his accent.
He hung up when I asked him to repeat his name.

I didn't have an opportunity to tell him which account I wanted the money transferred to.
Maybe next time!

I'm sorry fellas I'll quit calling. It's just so cold to go out and work on the Model T so I thought I could spend some time trying to raise some money to buy parts. :-)
