I have located an engine block near me and have no idea what it could be worth. Condition is unknown and until tomorrow will not have the serial number or other info. Of course, I will not know of the mechanical condition until it could be torn down.
WHAT IS IT WORTH? Scrap value or?
An engine may be a boat anchor or it may be worth a lot because of its rarity. Find the serial number first. Is it a starter block or pre starter block? Most cracks in the blocks will be around the water jacket under the top side of the motor. Look inside, is it rough, will it need boring (probably so) or does it have cracks in the cylinder wall? If a block is fixable, probably worth $50, if in good shape maybe up to $100. If really old it could be worth several hundred. Caution. These blocks are getting really hard to find in good shape.
Are you talking about block only or complete engine. Some peoples terms are different .??? Will make a huge difference in price.
We need more info like what approximate year, how complete and how it has been stored.. Stored outdoors for decades with no head and an open transmission in a rainy state - then it's scrap value, though a rare early 1909-13 block would have some value in pretty much any condition.
You say "engine block" then you say "until it could be torn down". Are you talking about just the short block, long block or the entire power plant with the CC pan and transmission. There's a huge difference in value between each. One could be scrap and the other end could have useable parts.
Get more detail, pictures and the serial number. If it's really, really old, it could be worth thousands.
Roger is totally correct. An early 1909 block sold a while ago in terrible condition for over $4000. 26/27 blocks that are usable with little repair work needed are well over $300, but ones with bad cracks worth about $5 as scrap. All depends
Thank you. I should have more info. tomorrow.
