There is a very good restorable 1915 touring for sale. The cowl lamps are the early style Brown, with no name on the tops.



Date on the seat tag is May 15, 1915:




It is a Beaudette body, with a "B" on the seat support:

That's Mike Walker with Jack. As usual, there was lots of looking and some shopping during the wait. I managed to find a couple of rims I needed, and Russ Furstnow found a speedometer gear for me. Royce brought me a left windshield hinge to go with the right one I got from Steve Tomaso, so in that field I am in tall cotton.

Not only did the weather turn out OK so far, but all the pre-meet apprehension over the condition of the line-up area was wasted. The lot is pretty much the same as ever. I hear the Erslands received so much griping over last year's gate police and the highly managed staging area that this year they decided to just take it easy and let the thing happen on its own. It appeared to me that it all went pretty smoothly with the folks lining up on their own. After all, most of these folks have been doing it for years and they know the drill.

The lineup was great and no grief from the gate police. The 1915 body was sold nearly as soon as it arrived. We bagged a few goodies too. Had a nice talk with Uncle Stan, Jack Daron, and others. Life is good.

That '09 Buick has great looking front fenders. Thanks for posting these, guys. This meet is on my bucket list.

The early Buick sounds great too. Saw the guy start it up on a couple quarter turns of the crank.

The Buick is actually a 1910 model 19 owned by Mike Yeakel of Bellingham, WA. It's on its way home from the HCCA convention in Texas.

Hope you didn't haul a trailer down there; if I recall, you've got a touring that needs a top, an aluminum Fordor that doesn't appear to need much to be top notch, and a TT that you haven't seen for so long that you probably can't even drag it outta' the barn! We were on tour with Mike Yeakel and his Buick in Kerrville, Texas (HCCA Convention, March 1-6). Brought our 13 T touring which spent more time in the trailer than on the road due to bad weather.

Kerrville is a great place to have a tour provided the weather is good. We went modern most days and still had a great time.

The front of our Motor home was iced over when we arrived at Fort Stockton Texas. Not fun driving when the road is iced and the 18 wheelers can't stay on the road.

Harold...I can't find any camaro or Honda parts anywhere, not sure it would be as much fun as our local excuse for a swap meet. And model T haven well it has just too many model T parts, no fun there either!! All lies, I am having a blast! Even got a 1911 torpedo bottom steering bracket! , how's that for rare. People are great here and it has been nice to meet so many I have heard so much about thru the forum. As for me.. I'm the cripple in the arm sling, if you see me say hello

Royce, one of your photos shows a earth strap on the firewall of the 15. I have not seen those before. What advantage is it to earth the coil box on a wooden firewall? Andrew NZ

It grounds the outside of the box to the steering column. That way if the wood box parts get wet, and you touch the metal parts, you don't get shocked by the stray voltage. At least that is my theory.

Apparently it was not deemed too important, it disappeared some time in 1916 I think.

There was a neat "Trackson" Fordson conversion. Appeared to be operational.

When I went to town to eat last night, I saw that Fordson on a trailer headed south. It didn't take long to sell.

Wow. That is a morale blow - didn't need to see that Trackson. Was only mildly envious of everyone there until the Trackson pictures popped up.

Donnie Brown probably found a pile of front-mount PTO kits for a T and bought them all for the price of scrap - along with a mint set of front wheels for a Shaw conversion kit (also at scrap prices). Maybe I need to avoid this thread and remain happy in my ignorance of what I'm missing.

Today started out a bit foggy, then got very foggy, followed by light rain, followed by a heck of a lot of rain.




1928 "AR" Roadster had the early style parking brake on the left, and not much else that was original. Paint was thick and cracking. Asking price was $18500.00.



Coker Tire and Wallace Wade Tire were set up in the big building.



Elizabeth from Classtique upholstery was installing a new top on Gary and Suzy Page's 1915 touring in the South building. It looked great, she is a perfectionist at what she does. Very impressive!

$6,500. It was built by Jerry Sweet of Iowa. He brings a freshly restored body just about every year. Each time I've seen him in the last ten years, he's told me he's told old and this is his last one.

FWIW the Maxwell Touring is the earliest version of the Model 25. It began in 1914 and was revised extensively for a year or so. This is a helpful photo for Maxwell enthusiasts. It is nice to see one made it to Chickasha.

I was at the first or second Chickasha years ago when it was a tiny little affair. And when pre-war meets were a new thing. Glad it took off.

I wish there was a pre-war meet somewhere in the northeast. Hershey has gotten to be a big parking lot for the most part. In fact it's seemed to me that the entire hobby has shifted to the midwest. There sure isn't much going on where I live in eastern New York/southern Vermont in spite of some great roads.

FYI - For those in the upper Midwest - Krause Publications hosts an 'Old Car Show & Swap Meet' at Iola, WI each summer. 2015 is July 9-11. Always a HUGE vendor/swap area. Finding parts I didn't know still exist provides adventure!

I have never been there, but from the meet reports and photos in the past Gaslight Gazettes, the "Brass in Berk's County' meet in Pennsylvania looks really good. May 17 this year according to the HCCA website calender. It also shows the Virginia date as May 14-16. I don't know the area so don't know if both would be easily doable or not.

According to Google Maps, it's just over 3-1/2 hours from Luray Caverns, VA to the Holiday Inn in Morgantown, PA. It should be very easy to take in both events.

I knew I wasn't feeling well today? The "Gaslight" Gazette is a local group newsletter. The "Horseless Carriage Gazette" is the national magazine with all the wonderful photos every year of the "Brass in Berk's County" meet (used to be "Brass in Buck's County" but it moved a few years ago). I look forward every year to the reports and photos even though I will likely never be able to go to it. Maybe, some day, I can make it to Chickasha.

I'm signed up for the BBC again this year. I hope to be there from the beginning, but my wife and I are scheduled to get back from Europe the day before, and we might get delayed. I expect to write up the tour and swap meet for the Horseless Carriage Club website, hcca.org. I wrote up two of the four touring days last year, but couldn't do the rest because my Brand X car died. Also, since last year I've learned to post pictures and captions to that site and have done so for several other tours. Anyone who's interested is cordially invited to look at that site and see what the HCCA tours are like.

Okay, so I have an off beat swap meet question.

I have not been to any kind of swap meet during my entire adult life. I am 52. I went to numerous car swap meets as a kid with my grandfather when we were building our speedster. The last swap meet I attended was probably back in 1978. As such, I really did not pay attention to financial transactions between Pa and a seller.

Here is my question:

How do you pay for high dollar stuff?

I can see bringing $1,000 in cash, if I had $1,000 cash. To me, anything beyond that is too much dough to carry around.

Do sellers take checks, travelers checks, credit card?

Hearing Steve Jelf say he saw that really cool Trackson Ford heading south on a trailer got me to thinking, "how did he/she pay for it?"

I haven't been to any pre-war swaps, but I used to go to a lot of Mopar swap meets years ago, including Carlisle and the Mopar Nationals. Most of the major vendors were equipped to accept credit cards.

I did go to the Mopar Nationals one year with $13K in cash in a fanny pack, hoping to find a 1971 Plymouth Cuda convertible project car in decent shape. Ended up not finding anything and re-depositing the cash in my account when I got home.

All of my hobby car transactions (buying and selling) have been done in cash, I've never had a problem. Maybe I've just been lucky.

I have used personal checks with no problem. I usually carry a little cash, but if a "major" (obviously different for everyone) purchase arises, I've used a check. My opinion is, if my check isn't worth taking, I don't need the part/piece.

For me it's more about the camaraderie and friends than the rust I buy (and pay more for than any other fool).

I have brought over 10 k sometimes, depends on my spider sense kicking in concerning goodies.

cash....lots of it. nobody is going to rob you at the swap meet,... well, unless you let them!

The Trackson was pre-sold and was being delivered.

I delivered a few items which I had sold thru the Classifieds section of this website, picked up a few items I had bought and arranged to pick up there to save shipping, and sold enough stuff there to pay for the trip. I also found all the items on my shopping list for the next build project. AND, I picked up several boxes of long-awaited wood parts for my Coupelet restoration!

But the best part about the Chickasha meet for me is seeing and visiting with Model T friends whom I see only once a year, there at the swap meet. And many others I see two or three times a year, there and on tours. It's great to get together with so many old friends who have the same common interest.

The combination of old friends, new friends, and Model T parts is hard to beat!

I found most of the parts I was after, and got to visit with a bunch of the folks, so it was a good trip. Most of the stuff I bought was under $100, a lot of it way under, and I paid cash. For the big item I paid by check.

Just got home. I thought the meet was a little smaller this year but most people seemed to do some business and until the heavy rain the outside was full of people on Thursday. Not so much today.

In the photo above, Ron Patterson is talking to renowned restorer Tracy Krone from Krown Restorations in Willsal, Montana and Tony Wiltshire of TW timers. Tracy is pretty much the world expert on White "Yellowstone Park" buses and early cars. Encyclopedia Tracy.

The Fordson tractor with the the tracks came from a private museum in Montana and was being delivered to a new owner in Tulsa. John Steele hauled it on my trailer. It was never for sale at Chickasha. I was going to make a sign that said, "$2500 or best offer" and then mark it "Sold" but never got a chance. Would have been fun, tho.

I scored a box of new old stock Stromberg carb parts, a couple five balls carbs, a six ball for early Torpedo's and a few other carbs. Some terrible Mexican food and some great ribs. Sold a few things, saw a lot of friends and had a good time. Tired. Bed Time.

Dang it! I was going to buy a timer from Tony, but the line was three deep when I walked by his booth. I figured I'd browse around a bit and head back after a few minutes. I guess my "oldtimers" kicked in and I got distracted. Now I'll have to pay shipping and miss out on meeting Tony.

I think John (or someone else) read your mind. During the Wednesday line up, there was a tag on the Fordson that said "For Sale, $2500," with "Sold" written across it. The tag wasn't very large, but I heard a few people comment about what a great deal they had missed out on......

This was my first trip to Chickasha, I was all excited about it and have heard of it for years. So this year I took the big trip 1100 miles straight through with a couple of us driving if not for meeting all the forum people in person it would of been a real let down! It was my first and last trip there, I brought a big pocket full of cash and most the iron there was in worse shape than I throw away every day and can not believe people where asking what they where?? So if this is on your bucket list to do, scratch it off and do Hershey instead! There is more stuff spread out at Hershey but better finds and prices but it takes you three days to do all the fields. Just my first time experiance! Joe

Made it home last night. Was a great swap meet for us. It seemed to be a little smaller as to vendors, but Wednesday parking lot sales were very fast and brisk with lots of buying going on between vendors and lots of customers, Thursday started off well with what appeared to be a lot of customers, but when the rain started it dropped off pretty fast as to customers and even some venders pulled the plug and covered up or left. Friday was pretty much done by noon. Still it was a good meet with lots of good buys and lots of meeting new people (new to me) from the forum. I saw several people wearing the name tags Steve and myself had put out. The only real negative and item of concern to me was the amount of "Big" vendors who were not there. Howells Sheet Metal, Restoration Supply Co, Bobs, Obsolete Parts Co (I think that is their new name?) as well as some others I do not remember right now. There were no "new/repro" Model T parts vendors there. I heard a few disappointed customers saying the was no place to buy the things they were wanting to get. There were the smaller vendors with a table or two, but no large vendors. Stan, a Model A friend of mine must have seen the 2500.00 tag mentioned above on the "Trackson", as he just could not believe that it was so cheap.. Ill try to post some pics later this evening. Ron, I did not find a pile of PTOs for scrap prices, but Ill be posting a couple of pics that you may want to look the other way and close your eyes Any way, my bunch had a great time, slept on the spaces, and woke up each morning with old car parts in our bed room, "now that is as good as it gets"

Discovered a new Mexican place. I'll have to try it next time I'm down there.

I had a great time, as always. The meet is half cars & parts and half camaraderie. I get to see a lot of friends there which I don't see anywhere else. And it was nice to have Uncle Jack back in attendance, along with 2 of his sons.

As Donnie said, there was lots of buying & selling going on Wednesday, and I got nearly all the parts on my "to buy" list then. Once inside, the buildings were not nearly so full as they usually are. I think it was due to the dreadful weather forecasts there, and I expect several folks back east still are knee-deep in snow.

I had intended to pick up some repro sheet metal from Rootlieb or Howell's, but neither was there. Neither was Bob's, nor Don Meadows from Nashville who usually has a big spread of nice used T parts.

Birdhaven, who bought out Texas T Parts, was there in the north building. I had a nice visit with the owners and will be buying more parts from them in the future.

Regardless of the smaller number of vendors, I got all the parts I needed, and I had a wonderful time. I'll be back next year, God willing.

Joe ,I totally agree with you. I went 3 years ago. For me it was 1500 miles one way. It was also my first time and I didn't know most of the serious buying and selling takes place prior to the actual swap meet. That was a lot of driving for a one day (Friday)swap meet as Saturday everyone packs up and goes home.
I'm hopeful that the new pre-war swap meet in Luray, VA, scheduled for May 14-16, 2015 will be better organized.
Other than Hershey there is nothing pre-war for the East coast guys. Hopefully others will feel the same way and will support this 1st time event Odds are the weather will be better. It will definitely be a more scenic location.

Rich it will be interesting if the new pre-war meet in Va. will have the 'pre-meet' buying and selling before the meet actually begins. This is gotten to be the way to do it at Chickasha and maybe other meets. Your observation has been discussed before and will continue to be I'm sure.

I gather Bob wasn't able to go this time because of the legal misfortune inflicted on his business recently. I hope we'll see him back next year. I don't know why so many of the other regulars missed this one. In addition to the ones Mike mentioned, there was no Ron Paetz, and no Restoration Supplies. Maybe it was the weather forecasts (it wasn't as bad as the predictions looked), or maybe it was the rumors about changes to the meet. Recently there was a post on Ford Barn asking about one of the bogus stories. Once somebody asks about something he "heard about" it takes on a life of its own and becomes fact in the minds of those who don't check it out, especially if the meet operators don't see it and post a correction right away.

Rich, actually Chickasha is a Thursday/Friday meet, not Friday/Saturday. There's some dealing that goes on Wednesday afternoon before everyone enters the grounds, but for me it's not enough to keep me from finding some deals during the official meet. I spent twice as much on Thursday as I did on Wednesday. After all, most of the goods aren't unpacked for you to see them on Wednesday.

While Hershey and Chickasha are quite different, I enjoy them both, despite the unpredictable Oklahoma spring and the traditional Pennsylvania fall monsoon. I don't know if I'll be able to make the new Virginia meet, but I hope it takes off and becomes a big deal. I still have to arrange an April trip to California sometime and check out the Bakersfield meet, have dinner at the Noriega Hotel, and ice cream at Dewars.

I hope the new meet in VA will take off and become a successful event as well. There need to be more than one pre-war swap meets scattered around this huge country of ours, so everyone has the opportunity to attend at least one. I count myself as fortunate to be only a 5-hour drive from Chickasha, so that's the one I attend. I doubt that I'll ever make it to the one in VA, but I'm glad for those folks who are closer to that venue.

I plan to motor as far as Richmond, IN this summer for the one at the MTFCA Museum. I hope it too will grow and prosper.

George, I knew when we went there the food would be terrible, I've been there before. When the parking lot is empty at 7 on Wednesday night during a swap meet in Chickasha you know it's going to be bad. It was edible, just not all that great. That's not true. It was terrible.

I have never been to another swap meet besides Chickasha that had any old car parts to speak of. I'd sure like to go to Bakersfield or Hershey but it isn't going to happen. I think the problem I see at Chickasha is that there are not many young people. What is going to happen when the old guys are gone? There were several people not there this year that I was looking forward to seeing. Like everything else, time will tell.

I was there as a seller and because Julie started a new job last week had no backup. It was 4 pm be I got to to the bathroom. Bought my first T part after that. Was a little sore from all the talking. Friday started off slow but ended up about the same. Sold more personal stuff on Thursday. Made some great contacts. Ran in to a lot of Model t people, missed a lot to.

OK, Stan, now you've got me dying to know. Which one was it? I want to know which one to avoid.

Jerry, I need some flanges. I want that manifold, too. The only time I got a chance to get over to where you were you had a bunch of people you were talking to, I was going to come back and couldn't get there before we left for the day. Good luck with the new company, by the way. I've been cutting flanges one at a time or cutting them off junk carbs (Kingston L'2's and 4's =) ) when I need them. Nice to see some good quality ones.

I had a great time while at Chickasha. I spent time connecting with old friends, including one couple that I first meet over 40 years ago in the old car hobby. I also spent time shopping and was able to capture a pair of no rivet rear axle housings for my early '09 T. What could be better?

I really enjoyed Chickasha this year. I visited with some great people that until now, I've only known through forum posts. I sold some pieces too large to ship easily and made myself a little elbow room. I brought my boy with me and we really shared some quality time.

I really behaved myself with my purchases and came back with enough cash to fund most of the new parts that I'll need to finish my '15 Runabout. I scored a SureMike crank, a '15 bulb horn, about a hundred coil cores for rebuilding and a correct '14-'15 door latch. The only things that I hoped to find, but didn't, were a Splitdorf coil box for my Maxwell and the correct two-piece tail light bracket for my '15 Runabout project.

I just can't believe that people would bash this meet. I've never seen a better collection of nice people and pre-war parts in one location. Sure some of the vendors think their parts are gold plated, but that helps me sell mine because they are reasonably priced. There are always good deals to be found at Chickasha. A friend paid asking price and bought a box full of brass head and side lamps for $50 per lamp.

Eric -- I have several of the lamp-holding part of the bracket you need which bolts to the rear of the body, but I'm out of the long part which holds the license plate. Let me know if the part I have will help you. waterwalk999@gmail.com

How many people would want to strangle me if I cut up my NOS '17 bracket and turned down a shank to make the part to make one of your brackets complete?

I'll keep my eye out and let you know if I can make use of one of your brackets. I think that I might just mount the '17 bracket on the car to give the Model T police something to chew on. I can always change it out if the correct bracket comes along.

RE: Bakersfield, Steve if you can't get into the Noriega, there's always Woolgrowers just down the street (other side of the street).

Jason, There were no PTOs at Chickasha that I saw. You probably mis-read Ron's post where he was saying I "probably" found a pile of them for scrap price... No such luck ... Im still looking for a "easy power" front PTO myself....

That early '15 body on its frame, (with early features, no body bolt in side, etc) got loaded on Mark Freimiller's flatbed and headed off to Model T Haven

Talked to Mark about it, and he will be looking for '15 fenders with the proper patina for the body, and make it more complete. Maybe with a correct '15 engine and driveline, you may see it again on his website for sale, perhaps???

The body was fairly nice, very little rust around the lower passenger side panel, the wood body sill there may be a bit soft from my look. A few panel dents and dings. Fire wall shot, wood in seat backs and seat frames strong. My guess is Mark paid fair price, probably around 2K, IMO.

Jason - I was joking with Donnie; if anyone could find a pile of front PTOs for the price of scrap, it is Donnie.

I think that early 15 has the wrong windshield hinges.

Steve - yes indeed, it had 1917 - later hinges.

I already had one KW timer, now I have two. The one on the left came from this year's swap meet, it appears to be new old stock with the gear and linkage, but no box or instructions.

The swap meet at the Homecoming in Richmond, Indiana on June 6 this year is prewar. We are also having free tours on June 4 and June 5 to add to your enjoyment. Come and make a long weekend of it.

Was disappointed I couldn't make it this year. My brother was graduating from boot camp at the same time and it just wasn't in the cards this time. Missed seeing all of you and plan on being back next year. Hope to catch up with you all at the MTFCI tour, Speedster reunion, or the early ford tour in Paynesville.

Donnie, you said "There were no "new/repro" Model T parts vendors there." I was there, in spaces NF 9 and 10. I make over 200 parts for Ts and pre-T Fords. I also had a good stock of my brother Jon's wood T parts.

Also had a small supply of the world's best cherry pie, to commemorate Wally's "last" Chickasha.

RV, sorry I missed you. I was mostly referring to the people like Howells, Obsolete Ford Parts, ect. that have the big spreads and cover 5 to 10 or more spaces. There used to be vendors that brought the "common" stuff like radiator hoses, fan belts, and all the little things. I hope I just missed them also. Without the vendors selling the "little stuff" we may just end up as a "mail order", "on-line" type of hobby. I usually get so "tunnel vision" on digging thru the rust and junk that I sometimes miss the "newer" looking things. And I am guilty myself of thinking, Ill save my money at the swap meet to buy rust, and buy the new stuff later from a catalog... I should mend my ways ...

If you do make it to Bakersfield I personally would like to buy you a double dip 3 scoop Dewars ice cream cone and maybe add a hand dipped milk shake. We go there in the evening and kinda take the place over until closing. It's a don't miss old fashion ice cream parlor.

Langs will bring anything you want to the swap meet if you order it before Don starts driving down next year.

Not only that, but Don will bring it to you. I ordered a wood firewall for my next build project and forgot to pick it up at their space. Don carried it out and handed it to me at my swap space on Friday. Now that's service!

I'm with Donnie - I'm usually too mesmerized by the color of rust to notice vendor tables. But Lang's is less than a 30 minute drive from my doorstep, so I'm sort of spoiled.

If you come to Bakersfield, and visit my space (O & P) I will give you a Haagen Dazs ice cream bar. No sales necessary! You can eat ice cream and look at rust all at the same time. It just does not get much better for us ice cream lovers at a swap meet! Sorry Guy's....The RV ice box is small and not big enough for every one. Steve....buy something from me and you could receive two ice cream bars.

This was my first Chickasha and I had a ball. Drove over with Jerry Van and Norm Bolz, met some forum contributors and caught up with some long-time friends like the Barths. I even found a Crystal Timer for $10 and two good used tires for my Brockway LaFrance fire engine. (By the way, does someone still make the ring for the Crystal timer? Mines good except for the advance hole.)
